WORLD SPINE DAY CELEBRATED IN GABORONE - CALL FOR EARLY SPINE CARE

Botswana Association of the Deaf joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Spine Day today with vibrant celebrations held in Gaborone, emphasising the importance of early intervention and inclusive spine health care.

The main celebration in Gaborone was held at Joy City Park in Tsholofelo where residents gathered for a wellness and awareness event. The event was graced by Councillor Biggie Butale and other delegates, who highlighted the need to prioritize spine health as a public health concern.

Residents from Mahalapye, members of the Spine Chair group and individuals living with spine-related conditions and injuries, were also present to share their lived experiences. Their participation brought a powerful message of resilience and the need for greater support for spine care victims.

A key highlight of the day was the involvement of Learn To Play Organisation, which conducted an induction on spine care and preventative exercises. The organisation emphasised that early mentorship of children in proper exercises and posture from a young age has long-term benefits.

"It is worth caring for the spine at an early age. When you instil good habits in children early, you lock in a lifetime of healthy spine practices," the facilitators noted.

As part of sustaining the momentum beyond World Spine Day, the organisers announced ongoing community exercise sessions open to all:

- Tsogang Primary School:Spine fitness and gym sessions every Saturday from 09:00pm to 12:00pm
- Maruapula: Community spine gym sessions from 08:00am to 10:00am

Both sessions are free and open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend and take charge of their spine health.

The celebrations ended with a unified call: a healthy spine is key to a healthy life, and it starts with early care.

BOTSWANA ASSOCIATION OF THE DEAF BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH

Early Detection Saves Lives

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. When detected early, it is highly treatable with over 90% survival rate. Late detection makes treatment difficult and expensive.

Why Inclusive for Deaf Women?

Most health information is shared on radio or verbally at clinics without Sign Language interpreters. Many Deaf women miss screening dates, fear clinics due to communication barriers, and are excluded from Pink October. BOAD provides Deaf-Friendly Services to bridge this gap. Nevertheless, breast cancer devices and information materials should be inclusive for all Women with Disabilities because they also face barriers to breast cancer screening.

Women with physical disabilities may struggle with accessing clinic buildings without ramps and accessible transport and screening equipment . Blind and visually impaired women also are in need of accessible health information. Women with intellectual disabilities may struggle to understand complicated medical information, while women with psychosocial disabilities may experience stigma and discrimination.
Every woman deserves accessible breast cancer information, respectful healthcare, early screening and equal opportunities for treatment. No woman should be left behind because of disability.

What is Screening?
1. Self-check monthly for any changes
2. Clinical breast exam by a nurse/doctor
3. Mammogram/Ultrasound scan at referral hospitals

Ditshupo / Signs of Breast Cancer
✔️Kgolane e ncha/New lump in breast
✔️phetogo ya sebopego/change in shape
✔️Letlalo le le sosobaneng/skin dimpling or redness
✔️Phetogo ya nipple/nipple change

Join any screening near you. Don't wait for pain. Contact BOAD for Deaf-friendly info & booking: 71 612 965
