ATN is a Non Governmental organisation with a vision to have a to***co-free Botswana.

Membership to ATN is open to individuals who are 13 years and above and established organisations that are not associated with the to***co industry. Individuals and organisations may apply in writing by submitting duly completed application forms.

𝘞𝘦 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘮𝘰𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘦𝘳 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘛𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘰-𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘦 𝘓𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘖𝘤𝘵𝘰𝘣𝘦𝘳!

In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month, Anti To***co Network, in collaboration with the University of Botswana (UB) Clinic, will host a series of mental health awareness campaigns every Monday and Wednesday throughout October. The initiative will bring together other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) to raise awareness about the connection between mental health, to***co use and Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), to***co use is one of the leading preventable risk factors for NCDs, including cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes. To***co use contributes to millions of deaths globally each year, highlighting the urgent need for stronger prevention and public awareness efforts.

WHO recognizes that ni****ne dependence and to***co use can negatively affect mental health and contribute to a cycle of stress, anxiety and withdrawal symptoms.

Through this campaign, we aim to promote healthier lifestyles, encourage to***co prevention and cessation, strengthen mental health awareness, and empower communities to make informed choices that reduce the risk of NCDs.

By working together with the UB and fellow CSOs, we are committed to building healthier, more informed and resilient communities where mental well-being and to***co-free living go hand in hand.

When you breathe in someone else’s to***co smoke, you are also exposed to hundreds of toxic and cancer-causing chemicals. The World Health Organization (WHO) confirms that there is no safe level of exposure to second-hand smoke, and that it causes cancer and other serious diseases.

11.1% of school-going children reported using electronic ci******es in Botswana.

This is not just a statistic. It is a warning, and we cannot afford to ignore it.

The to***co industry knows the regulatory gaps in Botswana and is exploiting them through aggressive marketing and advertising tactics.

The To***co Control Act, 2021 is the only key legislation that explicitly recognizes electronic ci******es as to***co products in Botswana and provides important protections, including a ban on the sale of to***co products to anyone under the age of 21.

However, the Act is yet to become fully operational, pending the signing and implementation of the necessary regulations.

What Is Happening on the Ground?

* Children are being exposed to addictive ni****ne products.
* Vapes are designed to look like sleek gadgets and everyday items, making them easier to conceal.
* Parents and teachers struggle to recognize and identify va**ng devices making it easier for children to hide them in plain sight.
* The to***co industry continues to promote the false narrative that va**ng is “harm reduction,” while concerns about ni****ne addiction and youth uptake continue to grow.

The Time to Act Is Now!

Anti To***co Network is calling for urgent action.

We cannot wait for more children to become addicted before we act.

We cannot keep chasing treatment while neglecting prevention. Our children are not a market. Their health is not for sale.

Kanye District Councillor, Hon. Calvin Matlale, made a passionate plea to his fellow councillors to work together towards stricter measures to control to***co use, warning that to***co continues to claim lives and contribute to serious health problems while offering no meaningful benefit to communities.

Councillor Matlale made the appeal following a presentation by Anti To***co Network (ATN) at the Kanye District Council Full Council last month, as part of the network’s efforts to fast track the signing of the regulations that will put the To***co Control Act, 2021 into action. The presentation highlighted evidence on the impact of to***co use on communities and its contribution to the growing burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs).

Expressing deep concern over the consequences of to***co use, Councillor Matlape urged his fellow councillors to collectively make to***co control a priority and advocate for stronger government action.

He emphasised that to***co use has contributed to significant loss of life and called on the council to unite in pushing for stricter to***co control measures and stronger interventions to protect communities from to***co-related harm.
