WHAT DO BATSWANA THINK ABOUT MARRIAGE EQUALITY? 🏳️‍🌈🇧🇼

What does public perception tell us about the conversation on marriage equality in Botswana?

LEGABIBO is currently conducting a public perceptions survey since May 2026 to better understand awareness, attitudes, concerns and perspectives around same-sex relationships and marriage equality.

Among the 85 people who participated, 88% indicated that they support or strongly support the legalisation of same-sex marriage. Respondents also highlighted the importance of equality, human dignity, legal protection and freedom from discrimination, while cultural and religious beliefs continue to shape some perspectives.

The findings offer an important snapshot of the conversations happening around marriage equality and remind us that public education, dialogue and continued engagement matter.

As we build momentum towards the next stage of the marriage equality case in October, we want to continue hearing from you.

Whose Stories Are Preserved? 🎨🏳️‍🌈

Who gets to be documented, represented and remembered in our cultural spaces, archives and digital platforms?

Join us this Saturday, 22 August 2026 at 10:00 AM for the webinar Whose Stories Are Preserved? Art, Identity and Representation in the Digital Age, hosted by Wikimedia Community User Group Botswana.

The panel will explore the visibility and preservation of stories from Black artists, women, LGBTQ+ communities and other underrepresented voices in the digital age.

At LEGABIBO, we believe that representation, visibility and the preservation of our histories are essential to building more inclusive spaces.

What does the Marriage Act say, and how does it connect to our constitutional rights to equality, dignity and freedom from discrimination?

In this video, one of our allies and friend of the community shares what they have learned about the Marriage Act and marriage equality - offering us an opportunity to learn, reflect and better understand why these conversations matter.

For us, it is also a reminder that allyship starts with learning. It means asking questions, having honest conversations, challenging discrimination and choosing to stand in solidarity with LGBTIQ+ people as we work towards a more equal Botswana. ❤️

Because understanding our rights is not just important for those directly affected - it matters to all of us.
