The UNFPA Botswana Country Programme Document (CPD) for 2027–2031 has been adopted by consensus at the Second Regular Session of the UNDP/UNFPA/UNOPS Executive Board!🎉
This marks an important milestone in our continued partnership with Botswana and sets the strategic direction for UNFPA’s work in the country over the next five years.
Presenting the CPD, the Regional Director for UNFPA East and Southern Africa Regional Office, Ms. Lydia Zigomo, highlighted Botswana’s unique opportunity to harness its demographic transition:
“With strong institutions, upper-middle-income status and declining fertility, Botswana has an important but narrowing window to realize its demographic dividend. UNFPA will support the government to translate demographic intelligence into forward-looking policy and investments, strengthen youth-responsive systems and expand equitable access to sexual and reproductive health, ensuring that young people are equipped to contribute fully to Botswana’s future development.”
We are deeply grateful to the BWgovernment for its continued partnership and support. The new CPD is fully aligned with Botswana’s national priorities and long-term development strategies, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2027–2031. This alignment will enable more cohesive, effective and impactful support towards the country’s development vision.
Speaking in support of the CPD, Ambassador Charles Masole, Permanent Representative of Botswana to the United Nations, underscored the strength of the partnership:
“We underscore the vital partnership between the Government of Botswana and UNFPA and express our full support for the 8th CPD, co-developed through a rigorous government-led consultation process engaging civil society, traditional leaders, youth networks and development partners.”
The 8th Country Programme will build on this strong foundation to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights, empower women and young people, strengthen youth-responsive systems, and ensure that no one is left behind.
As we look ahead to 2027–2031, UNFPA Botswana remains committed to working alongside partners and stakeholders to turn Botswana’s demographic opportunity into lasting development gains.
