A Cultural Encounter Across Mountains and Oceans: Sino-Botswana Youth Food and Tea Cultural Exchange Event Successfully Held
On September 6, 2025, a unique cultural exchange event—"Cultural Collision: Food and Tea Traditions of China and Botswana"—concluded successfully in a joyful and warm atmosphere. Organized by the Botswana Chinese Youth Organization (BCYO), the event brought together 10 students from the University of Botswana and 10 Chinese students from local Chinese education institutions. Through a series of interactive activities, participants deeply experienced the cultural traditions of both countries in food, tea art, board games, and language.
The entire event was filled with laughter and meaningful engagement. It was particularly heartening to see that throughout the activity, not a single student was glued to their phone—everyone was fully immersed in each segment, demonstrating strong participation and team spirit.
The event began with a random draw to form mixed teams of Chinese and Botswanan students. Two teams worked together to complete fun competitions such as "Peanut Transfer with Chopsticks," "Blind Tea Tasting," "Board Game Duel," and "Language Whispering." During the tea culture experience, the youths carefully observed, smelled, and tasted the tea, savoring the distinct flavors of Chinese black tea and Botswana Rooibos tea. In the tableware culture presentation, they listened to each other explain the philosophy and cultural significance behind the utensils, reflecting on different civilizations’ interpretations of life aesthetics.
More importantly, this event was not just a cultural showcase but also a practice of positive social interaction. The children learned to listen, express, and collaborate through cooperation, while maintaining respect and friendship in competition—truly embodying the deeper meaning of "cultural blending and heart-to-heart connection."
In the end, all participating students received commemorative tea cups and certificates of participation. The winning team also received small cash prizes as encouragement. The event concluded warmly with a shared lunch of Setswana chicken and Chinese dumplings, followed by a closing prayer and group photo, marking a perfect end to this cross-cultural journey.
This activity not only allowed the youths to appreciate the significance of cultural heritage but also planted seeds of friendship and understanding in their hearts. Food and tea, games and language—all are vessels of culture. What truly moved the heart was the openness, respect, and empathy the children showed throughout the exchange.
