Another week, another opportunity to connect with the people who keep the Botswana Red Cross Society moving.

This week, Our Secretary General and Chief Executive Officer Dr Kutlwano Mukokomani continued his branch support visits in Lokgwabe, Tshane, Lehututu, Kang and Tshootsha.

The visits are about more than just checking in. They create space to sit down, listen, share experiences and understand what our volunteers are seeing and experiencing on the ground. From celebrating what is working to talking openly about the challenges, these conversations help us find ways to better support our branches and volunteers.

The SG also had the opportunity to engage with Dikgosi, strengthening the relationship between BRCS and traditional leadership and recognising their important role in reaching and supporting communities.

Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS) took flood preparedness straight to the classroom, equipping learners with practical knowledge on how to stay safe before, during and after floods.

Seven schools in Palapye District took part including Moeng Primary School, Moeng College, Mmachibaba CJSS, Molebatsi Primary School, Lerala CJSS, Seolwane Primary School and Borakanelo Primary School.

Through interactive awareness sessions, learners learned to recognise flood risks and early warning signs, understand what actions to take, and share these messages with their families and communities.

BRCS also donated dustbins and fruit trees to participating schools and Kgotlas - promoting cleaner environments, environmental responsibility and stronger, more resilient communities.

Learning Together, Growing Together

This week, Botswana Red Cross Society hosted colleagues from the Zambia Red Cross Society and Netherlands Red Cross for a regional exchange visit focused on learning, sharing experiences and strengthening community resilience.

The exchange brought together two National Societies that are both supported financially and technically by the Netherlands Red Cross, creating an important platform to share knowledge, strengthen capacity and learn from each otherโ€™s experiences.

The first day focused on tree planting and care, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) opportunity scanning and the Integrated Landscape Plan. The sessions provided an opportunity to explore practical approaches to climate resilience and how nature-based solutions can be strengthened and scaled in different contexts.

The delegations also visited BRCS programmes and engaged directly with communities, including Sorilatholo, where they heard about the experiences, benefits, challenges and sustainability of community-led interventions implemented by BRCS supported by Netherlands Red Cross.
The greatest value of the exchange was peer learning: sharing what works, understanding different approaches, identifying opportunities for collaboration and exploring how successful experiences can be adapted to each National Societyโ€™s context.

For BRCS, the visit was also an opportunity to reflect on its work through the perspectives of Movement partners, while strengthening relationships and creating opportunities for future collaboration.

When National Societies share, the Movement grows. When the Movement grows, communities benefit. Rode Kruis Zambia Red Cross Society HQ

Rehabilitation for Real Life Beyond Exercises

Rehabilitation comes alive when it translates into everyday life. During our Community-Based Rehabilitation and physiotherapy outreach to villages across districts, the Botswana Red Cross Society Physiotherapy team brings services to communities through our Physiotherapy Mobile Clinics, working in collaboration with Medical Officers at local clinics who identify and refer patients for rehabilitation. Through assessment, treatment, education and collaboration with individuals, families and communities, we continue to support people to move, function, participate and achieve greater independence. Because the true measure of rehabilitation is not what happens during the session, but what becomes possible afterwards.

Reflecting, Learning and Building Resilience Together

Weโ€™ve just wrapped up an inspiring two-day partnership review with our colleagues from the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC), an opportunity to reflect on our journey, celebrate what has worked, learn from our experiences and look ahead to the future.

Since 2020, Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS) and the Netherlands Red Cross have worked together to strengthen disaster preparedness and resilience in Botswana. Through this partnership, we have strengthened local volunteers, supported community-based systems, worked with government partners and contributed to building more resilient communities.

Officially opening the meeting, BRCS Secretary General Dr Kutlwano Mukokomani emphasised the importance of recognising what has delivered value, identifying areas where performance can be strengthened, and agreeing on what is needed to ensure the partnership remains relevant, effective, sustainable and mutually reinforcing.

He expressed BRCSโ€™s sincere appreciation for NLRCโ€™s investment in the partnership, noting that its value extends beyond resources. The collaboration has contributed to strengthening institutional capability, providing technical direction and enhancing BRCSโ€™s regional positioningโ€”areas that are strategically important to BRCS and the wider Movement. He also highlighted the relationship of confidence, cooperation and shared commitment that has developed between the two National Societies.

As the workshop was officially closed, the BRCS Board President Itumeleng Otto Odirile emphasised the importance of reviews and evaluations in understanding impact and strengthening future programming. He encouraged the team to go beyond project results and capture real stories and insights from the communities whose lives have been touched by the collaboration, while also exploring opportunities for continued partnership.

The NLRC team expressed appreciation for the Presidentโ€™s words of encouragement and the evaluation exercise, while also commending the commitment and work ethic demonstrated by BRCS staff. The peer-to-peer exchange and learning were highlighted as valuable opportunities to learn from one another and identify new areas for collaboration.
Thank you, Netherlands Red Cross, for walking this journey with us since 2020. Hereโ€™s to many more years of learning, strengthening our partnership and building resilience together!
