The Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS) participated in a two-day Gaborone District Disaster Management Training at Maruapula Community Hall, bringing together District leaders, Members of Parliament, Honourable Councillors, Court Presidents, and Ward Development Committee Chairpersons to strengthen disaster preparedness, early warning, response, and recovery.

During the training, Mr. Mompoloki Nawa, BRCS Disaster Risk Management Coordinator, presented on Community Mobilization and Stakeholder Engagement, highlighting BRCS as a model for community-based disaster risk reduction and resilience-building.

He emphasized the importance of meaningful community consultations, indigenous knowledge, active community participation, and strong collaboration among government institutions, humanitarian organizations, the private sector, traditional leaders, and communities.

With Botswana facing interconnected hazards such as droughts, floods, wildfires, disease outbreaks, and climate change impacts, inclusive partnerships and coordinated action are essential. Communities must be recognized not merely as beneficiaries, but as active partners in identifying risks, developing solutions, and building lasting resilience.
The training reinforced the importance of strong local leadership and collective action in safeguarding vulnerable communities across Botswana.

Botswana Red Cross Society (BRCS), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, Botswana and the Ministry of Local Government and Traditional Affairs - Botswana, with support from UNICEF Botswana and the Embassy of Japan in Botswana - ๅœจใƒœใƒ„ใƒฏใƒŠๆ—ฅๆœฌๅ›ฝๅคงไฝฟ้คจ is conducting Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) training for health workers across Ghanzi and North West Districts.

Taking place from 12-16 October 2026 in Maun, the training forms part of the capacity-building component of the Community-Based Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) project, which seeks to strengthen community-level identification, referral and management of malnutrition among children.

Through the CMAM project, Community Health Workers (CHWs) engage households and communities to identify children at risk of malnutrition, provide information on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF), and refer children with suspected or identified malnutrition to health facilities for further assessment and appropriate care.

Strengthening the capacity of health workers is essential to ensuring that children identified with acute malnutrition receive timely, appropriate, and effective treatment, improving their chances of recovery and supporting better health outcomes.

The training brings together health workers from clinics and hospitals across Ghanzi and North West Districts and is led by Principal Nursing Officer Mr. Mompoloki Maruatona, alongside other health and social professionals.

Through this collaboration, BRCS and its partners continue to invest in strengthening health systems, building frontline capacity, and improving access to quality nutrition services for vulnerable children and their families.

Through the IFRC DREF Flood Response, the Botswana Red Cross Society has reached 200 flood-affected households across Lerala, Maunatlala, Mokokwana, Mosweu and Seolwane in the Tswapong area with agricultural seeds and organic fertilisers.

The support goes beyond helping communities recover from the February floods. It is also a step towards anticipatory action as farmers prepare for the upcoming rainy season, which remains uncertain and may bring below-average rainfall or even prolonged dry spells.

By providing maize, sorghum, sugar beans and lablab seeds, alongside organic fertilisers, the initiative seeks to help farmers resume production, strengthen household food security and rebuild their livelihoods.

With the potential of the Tswapong underground water resources to support agricultural production, there is an opportunity for farmers to supplement rainfall-dependent farming, improve yields and amplify their harvests.

Because recovery is not just about bouncing back from a disaster; it is about preparing for what lies ahead and building resilience to future shocks.

Botswana Red Cross Society held its inaugural Fire Safety Training from the 4thโ€“8th October, equipping eight trainees with essential knowledge and practical skills to respond to fire emergencies.

The first cohort comprises individuals preparing to enter the mining sector, where fire safety and emergency preparedness are critical to protecting lives, property and promoting safer working environments.

This milestone reflects BRCSโ€™s commitment to strengthening emergency response capacity and equipping individuals with the skills needed to contribute to safer workplaces and more resilient communities.
