World Wetlands Day is observed annually on 2 February to mark the adoption of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, an international treaty dedicated to the conservation and wise use of wetlands worldwide.
The global commemoration this year focused on the theme “Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage in relation to climate change.” This theme highlights the deep and enduring connections between wetland ecosystems and the cultural practices, wisdom, and traditional knowledge of communities that have lived alongside these landscapes for generations. It emphasizes how such knowledge—embodied in practices ranging from water management and agriculture to spiritual beliefs—has long contributed to sustainable wetland stewardship and resilience in the face of environmental change.
