TRADE MINISTRY DEFENDS 35% ALCOHOL LEVY AMID CALLS FOR REMOVAL

The Ministry of Trade and Industry says scrapping the 35% alcohol levy will not benefit consumers. This follows calls from traders and residents for its removal, arguing it raises prices.

Speaking during a Kgotla meeting in Bobonong recently, Minister Tiroeaone Ntsima said ending the levy would only benefit alcohol businesses, while government could use it to fund rehabilitation centres.

He further called for bars to be sound proofed and for traditional brews sold at homes to be separated from family spaces.

Meanwhile, Bobirwa MP Taolo Lucas urged large scale production of local brews to create jobs and boost exports.

"Gender-based violence and alcohol and substance abuse are deeply interconnected, with substance misuse often exacerbating the cycle of violence in our communities. To break this harmful pattern, we must urgently scale up targeted interventions for our youth and children, empowering them with knowledge, support, and healthy alternatives that foster safer and more resilient futures."
