From Words to Action: The Urgency of Gender Equality

As we face monumental challenges like climate change, inequality, and conflict, gender equality is no longer just an ideal—it's a necessity for the survival and prosperity of our world. At the recent Summit of the Future, leaders from around the globe reminded us of this truth. Despite all the high-level commitments, it will take 137 years to lift all women and girls out of poverty unless we act NOW.

The statistics are alarming. None of the indicators under SDG 5 (Gender Equality) are on track. But the truth is, gender equality isn’t a secondary issue—it’s at the heart of solving our global crises. Whether it’s innovation, peace, or economic growth, the active participation and leadership of women are critical.

As Maria Espinosa aptly said: “The real challenge lies not in making bold commitments, but in turning them into real, impactful change.” It’s time for governments, businesses, and communities to walk the talk. Gender equality is the linchpin for achieving global development goals. Without women's leadership and inclusion at every level, we won’t get far.

The message is clear: we must move beyond words and take transformative action to ensure gender equality becomes a reality. It’s time to step up and make sure women’s rights are at the core of every decision we make.

6TH GIMAC Strategic Engagement with AU, RECs and Partners in Accra, Ghana. My takeaway? We need to shift from the conversation on Gender Equality to Gender Equity. It’s a must!

Gender equality has been a longstanding goal for many organisations and individuals. It has been argued (to which I subscribe) that the focus of this advocacy should be intentionally shifted toward the call for gender equity. The gender gap that has existed over the years is too wide in number, influence, and affluence, to maintain the conversation at equality, and assume that with quality, problems are solved. Gender equality is not enough, because equality assumes everyone starts from the same place, but that’s not the case. Women have historically been disadvantaged, so we need to address that gap. In educational access, retention, and completion, for instance, equal access to schools, i.e., gender parity, is not enough. Girls need additional support to overcome cultural and social barriers that prevent them from attending, staying in, and completing school, and progressing to higher attainments.

“The President of the Republic of Ghana, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as Champion for the establishment of the 𝐀𝐟𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 (being the African Central Bank (ACB), the African Monetary Fund (AMF), the African Investment Bank (AIB) and the Pan-African Stock Exchange (PASE) continues to advocate for the promotion of economic integration and development across the continent. The strengthening of these institutions will collectively enhance 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲, promote 𝐬𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 and facilitate greater 𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 among AU Member States.

Ghana will continue to assiduously work on all fronts towards advancing the implementation of the shared vision of the #𝐀𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝟐𝟎𝟔𝟑 of the African Union and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations.

I would like to emphasize the need to harness our collective strengths in utilising opportunities and finding solutions to the challenges presented to our continent, including in the education sector as per our commitment to this year’s theme.”
