The first week of August is World Breastfeeding Week, and the theme is "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life: Strengthen What Works."

If you are breastfeeding, please do not ignore changes. Do not wait until you wean the baby, because the earlier you seek treatment, the better your chances of beating breast cancer.

Mathubantwa Post Office pension collection day in Molepolole was abuzz with activity yesterday, with awareness stalls set up during the 'Meet Them Where They Are' Elderly Outreach Initiative organised by Hon. Kenna Odirile.

The day was about honouring elders through compassion, dignity and community care. We were proud to be part of the initiative, alongside the District AIDS Coordination (DAC) Office, healthcare providers and other civil society organisations serving the community.

Our team engaged older men and women in conversations about breast health, the importance of early detection, and the simple habit of regular self-checks. By taking health information and services directly to where people already gather, we help remove barriers to access and create opportunities for meaningful conversations that could save lives.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this initiative possible. Together, we are building healthier, more informed communities - one conversation at a time.

"We need to understand the difference between s*x and gender, and how this can affect the experiences of people with different gender identities when they access health services."

This is the message that the Director of Rainbow Identity Association Bw Skipper Mogapi shared, to contextualise the purpose of the Wellness event at Molapo Crossing, this morning.

Different speakers - including the Deputy Mayor of Gaborone, Mme Mankie Delete, Endocrinologist Dr Brooks, and Onica Lekuntwane from Journey of Hope Botswana contextualised the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle changes.

Mogapi and Sekete also spoke to the access and stigma challenges that Transgender and Inters*x people face when trying to take charge of their health.

If you are in the Molapo Crossing area, Gaborone please pass by the event, to get first-hand health information about breast cancer, eye health, BMI, diabetes, hypertension and even drug usage. It is also a great opportunity to learn more about the association, and how they can help transgender and inters*x individuals and their community.

Today marks 7 years since the passing of our co-founder, Bev Denbury.

We think of her fondly - and often - because we are constantly reminded of the countless lives she touched during her time at the helm of Journey of Hope Botswana.

Bev believed that every person deserved hope, compassion and access to life-saving breast health services. Her kindness inspired volunteers, her determination opened doors, and her unwavering commitment laid the foundation for the work we continue today.

Though she is no longer with us, her legacy lives on in every screening, every awareness talk, every life changed, and every volunteer who chooses to serve with the same spirit of generosity she embodied.

Today, we remember her with deep gratitude.

Thank you, Bev, for your vision, your courage, and the love you poured into this organisation and the people of Botswana. You are deeply missed, forever remembered, and always a part of the Journey of Hope Botswana family.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Every year - for one week in August/September - a team of between 30 and 40 volunteers come together to provide breast cancer awareness and screening identified communities throughout Botswana.

These volunteers include Doctors, Nurses, Survivors and Allies, who recognise the importance of offering free breast health services to communities which may have challenges with accessing quick and reliable services.

The services that Journey of Hope Botswana provides during the Big Journey include:
- teaching the importance and technique of self breast examination (SBE)
- offering clinical breast screening, conducted by trained healthcare professionals
- distribution of breast cancer and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) awareness materials.
- following up with patients whose breast changes could be signs of cancer.
- linking diagnosed patients to treatment facilities.

What questions do you have about the Big Journey?
