🚀 UBEIS at the Empower & Employ Seminar

The University of Botswana Entrepreneurship & Innovation Society (UBEIS) was honoured to attend the Empower & Employ Seminar hosted by the University Of Botswana Economic Society.

💡 Key takeaways:

Entrepreneurship is a viable solution to unemployment — start small, work hard, and grow with intention.

Support from LEA, CEDA, BITC, and digital tools is vital for entrepreneurial acceleration and inclusion.

A business model matters more than the product — from freemium to franchise, entrepreneurs must be strategic in how they create and deliver value.

The seminar closed with a powerful panel discussion, where entrepreneurs shared honest stories about resilience, relevance, and real growth in today’s market.

Thank you to the University of Botswana Economics Society for the invite and empowering dialogue. We’re inspired!

Consistency is underrated.
In a world that celebrates big wins and viral launches, what really builds successful startups— especially at student level— is showing up every day.

You don’t have to go fast.
You don’t have to be loud.
You just have to be consistent.

Whether you're building a product, refining your pitch, or trying to grow your audience— small steps every day will always beat short bursts of motivation.

Practical Tip:
Pick one small task related to your goal and do it every day for 30 days.
You’ll be shocked at the momentum that builds from simple consistency.

“Dream big. Start small. But most of all, start.” — Simon Sinek

You’ve mapped out the idea.
Talked about it with friends.
Daydreamed about what it could become.

But none of it counts until you start.

The difference between you and the person running their own business?
They got tired of talking and took the first step.

Don’t wait for perfect timing.
Don’t wait until the plan is fully polished.
Don’t wait for someone to validate your vision.

Start with what you have.
Start messy.
Start unsure.
But start.

📌 Because dreams only become real when motion enters the picture.

to our very first UBEIS event—
“Exploring Business Opportunities for Botswana’s Youth.”

Nearly two years later, the gems dropped that day still hit:
From “knock on every door” to “know yourself and your vision,” it was more than just a panel— those were seeds for the journey we’re still on today.

Grateful for how far we’ve come, and even more excited for what’s next.

The most powerful thing you can do for your startup isn’t getting more funding or crafting a perfect pitch. It’s getting a mentor.

Many entrepreneurs try to do it all on their own, believing they need to have all the answers. But here’s the truth:
Even the best of us need someone to guide us, challenge us, and point out blind spots.

A mentor isn’t just a cheerleader.
They’re a strategic partner. Someone who’s been where you are and has made the mistakes that you don’t have to.
They push you to think differently, take calculated risks, and avoid costly pitfalls.

Pro Tip:
Don’t just look for someone with the experience — look for someone who’s willing to invest in your growth.
A mentor's value comes in their willingness to share lessons, provide feedback, and help you navigate the rough waters.

Action Step:
Start by identifying one person in your network or community whose advice you trust. Reach out, ask for a quick 15-minute call, and take it from there.

“Winners are winners because they don’t quit when things don’t go according to plan.” — Vusi Thembekwayo

Let’s be real — nothing ever goes exactly how you planned it.

Your idea will pivot.
Your pitch will flop.
Your prototype will crash.
And sometimes… it’ll feel like you’re building in the dark.

But that’s what makes an entrepreneur.
Not just dreaming big — but sticking around when it’s not pretty.
When no one claps.
When the plan doesn’t work.
When it’s just you, your notes, and stubborn belief.

📌 If it was meant to be smooth, it wouldn’t be called building.

So here’s your Monday fuel:
If you’re still in the game — you’re already ahead.

🚀 UBEIS Team Joins the Techstars Startup Weekend! 💡✨

This past weekend, members of the University of Botswana Entrepreneurship and Innovation Society (UBEIS) had the incredible opportunity to participate in Techstars Startup Weekend – a high-energy, 54-hour innovation sprint powered by Merce Anders Equity Group.

The event brought together passionate entrepreneurs, innovators, tech enthusiasts, and mobility experts to turn bold ideas into real startup concepts through intense collaboration, rapid prototyping, and guidance from top-tier mentors.

So, what exactly is Techstars Startup Weekend?
It’s a globally recognized program designed to empower aspiring entrepreneurs through hands-on experience. Over the course of just one weekend, participants form teams, validate business ideas, develop prototypes, and pitch their solutions to a panel of judges. It’s not just an event – it’s a launchpad for the next generation of startups!

From brainstorming to the final pitch, the energy was electric, the ideas were disruptive, and the collaboration was inspiring.

A huge congratulations to the Top 3 Winning Teams:
🏆 Nkitsi
🥈 Fund Circle
🥉 Sesigo Markets

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Emilie Vallauri for inviting UBEIS to be a part of such a transformative and wholesome experience. We walked away empowered, inspired, and ready to build!

This is what innovation looks like. This is what the future feels like.
