NATIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION (NPC) PARTAKES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF BOTSWANA (UB) ALUMNI SYMPOSIUM 2026

The University of Botswana Alumni Symposium 2026, held under the theme "Architects of Transformation: Mobilizing Alumni Excellence for UB," brought together alumni, policymakers, and industry leaders to explore how innovation, leadership, and collaboration can drive Botswana's development.

A key highlight was a presentation by Mrs. Khumo Mogaetsho from the NPC, who outlined the implementation of National Development Plan (NDP) 12 and emphasized the important role UB alumni can play in advancing Botswana's transformation agenda through their expertise and experience.

The symposium also featured discussions on innovation, entrepreneurship, digital transformation, financial inclusion, and Artificial Intelligence, with participants calling for stronger partnerships between academia, industry, and government to support sustainable growth and national prosperity.

NPC HOSTS THE BOTSWANA SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs) STATUS REPORT VALIDATION WORKSHOP

The National Planning Commission (NPC), in partnership with the United Nations, yesterday successfully hosted the Botswana SDGs Status Report (2015–2025) Validation Workshop at Cresta Hotel in Gaborone, bringing together stakeholders from government, civil society, academia, the private sector and development partners.

In his opening remarks, the Commissioner General for the NPC, Mr. Kabelo Ebineng described the exercise as "more than a review of a report" but rather "a moment of national reflection" as Botswana assesses a decade of progress towards achieving the SDGs. He emphasized the importance of taking stock of Botswana’s development progress, strengthening evidence-based implementation, and accelerating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals through NDP 12 and Vision 2036. Mr. Ebineng further stressed that the SDGs represent Botswana's shared commitment to building "a prosperous, inclusive, resilient and sustainable Botswana".

In addition, the UN Resident Representative, reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Botswana’s sustainable development journey through strong partnerships, data-driven decision-making and inclusive development.

In closing, Deputy Commissioner General, Mr. Kelapile Ndobano commended stakeholders for their active participation and valuable contributions to the validation process. He encouraged continued collaboration and accountability to ensure that the workshop’s outcomes translate into meaningful development results for all Batswana.

NATIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION HIGHLIGHTS STRATEGIC ALIGNMENT AT THE ONGOING BDF 21st STRATEGIC CONFERENCE

The Commissioner General for the National Planning Commission (NPC), Mr Kabelo Ebineng delivered a presentation at the ongoing Botswana Defence Force 21st Strategic Conference held at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks in Gaborone under the theme, “Maintaining a Capable and Cost-Effective Defence Under Fiscal Constraints.” Mr Ebineng highlighted the critical role of integrated planning, efficient resource utilisation, and strengthened institutional coordination in supporting national security and development objectives.

He brought strategic insight into aligning defence planning with Botswana’s broader national development priorities. Discussions emphasised the importance of implementation coordination, performance monitoring, and evaluation frameworks, including the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP) and National Development Plan 12 (NDP 12), to ensure that defence strategies remain responsive, sustainable, and supportive of the country’s long-term socio-economic transformation agenda.

NATIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION (NPC) HOSTS NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR POLICY AND STRATEGIC STUDIES (NIPSS) OF NIGERIA

The National Planning Commission is honored to host representatives from the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Nigeria, during a productive engagement ahead of the Senior Executive Course (SEC) 48 study visit to Botswana.

Discussions focused on the 2026 study theme, “Orange Economy and Sustainable Development in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Opportunities,” highlighting the importance of collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange in advancing sustainable development through the creative and cultural industries.

The partnership between NPC and NIPSS is a stepping stone to strengthening regional partnerships and sharing valuable insights that contribute to economic growth and policy development across Africa.

NPC AND STATISTICS BOTSWANA BRIEF ACCOUNTING OFFICERS ON IMPROVEMENTS TO THE NATIONAL DATA PIPELINE

The National Planning Commission (NPC), in collaboration with Statistics Botswana, held a briefing and update session with Accounting Officers from various Ministries to share progress on improvements made to the national data pipeline. The session focused on strengthening data collection, management, reporting, and coordination processes to support evidence based planning and decision making across Government.

The engagement highlighted the importance of timely, accurate, and integrated data in driving national development priorities and monitoring implementation of programmes under the National Development Plan. NPC and Statistics Botswana reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with Ministries and stakeholders to enhance the national monitoring and evaluation system (NMES), improve efficiency, and promote a more responsive and informed public sector.

NPC HOSTS SENEGAL’S STRATEGIC ORIENTATION COMMITTEE FOR OIL AND GAS (COS-PETROGAZ)

The National Planning Commission (NPC) hosted a delegation from Senegal’s Strategic Orientation Committee for Oil and Gas (COS-PETROGAZ), in a benchmarking mission organized with the support of the United Nations Development Programme.

The delegation’s exchange visit to Botswana sought to draw lessons from the country’s experience in sustainable natural resource management, particularly in contract negotiation, sovereign wealth fund governance, and the integration of extractive revenues into national planning.

The visit also explored the role of natural resources in advancing inclusive development, energy transition, poverty reduction, and reducing inequalities in Senegal.

During the engagement, the National Planning Commission presented on its mandate and highlighted Botswana’s planning processes, emphasizing how natural resources have been strategically utilized to support inclusive national development and sustainable economic transformation.
