Yesterday to set the tone for the National Business Conference, Mr. Kabelo Ebineng - Commissioner General of the National Planning Commission spoke to strategic foresight along other captains of industry.

Key take away was on how planning has to evolve and that diversification is needed today more than tomorrow as Botswana moved to be more private sector led.

NPC AND UN BOTSWANA ADVANCE PREPARATIONS FOR THE THIRD VOLUNTARY NATIONAL REVIEW (VNR)

The National Planning Commission (NPC) met with the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office to discuss preparations for Botswana’s Third Voluntary National Review (VNR), which will assess the country’s progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Led by NPC with support from UN Botswana, the review process will commence in October 2026 and conclude in June 2027, ahead of Botswana’s presentation at the 2027 High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.

The report will focus on Quality Education (SDG 4), Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Life on Land (SDG 15), and Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17), highlighting progress and opportunities to advance sustainable and inclusive development in Botswana.

THE SECOND PRESIDENTIAL BUSINESS ROUNDTABLE (DIAMOND JUBILEE)

The National Planning Commission (NPC), in collaboration with the Office of the President and Business Botswana held the Second Presidential Business Roundtable (PBR) – Diamond Jubilee Edition, on the 8th October 2026 at Hotel 430 in Gaborone.

The event was co-chaired by the President of the Republic of Botswana, Advocate Duma Gideon Boko and Business Botswana President, Mr. Neo Nwako, the meeting brought together key stakeholders from government, regulatory bodies, parastatals, funding institutions and the private sector to address barriers to mining value-chain development and financial and investment growth.

The engagement focused on investor facilitation and unlocking new economic drivers of growth, with particular emphasis on addressing bottlenecks that constrain investment, value-chain development, economic diversification, and the broader national economic development agenda.

THE INAUGURAL ANNUAL NATIONAL PERFORMANCE REPORT REFERENCE COMMITTEE

Today, the National Planning Commission presented the 2025/26 Draft Annual Report to the Reference Committee, providing an assessment of Botswana’s progress against Vision 2036, NDP 12, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2063.

The presentation, led by the Commissioner General and the Deputy Commissioner General for Implementation Coordination, highlighted key achievements, including progress in electricity and broadband access, financial inclusion, governance and the creation of manufacturing jobs, while also drawing attention to persistent challenges in economic diversification, productivity, employment, project delivery and public sector performance.

The discussions further emphasized that Botswana’s principal development challenge is increasingly one of implementation effectiveness bridging the gap between approved policies and plans and what is ultimately delivered, spent and measured.

NATIONAL ESG STRATEGY VALIDATION WORKSHOP

Botswana is strengthening its commitment to sustainable and inclusive development through the National ESG Strategy and Implementation Framework.

The workshop provided a platform for stakeholders to validate the framework, strengthen coordination and advance responsible investment, sustainable finance, climate resilience, economic diversification and inclusive growth.

The strategy seeks to position Botswana as Africa’s benchmark for sustainable development, translating ESG commitments into tangible outcomes for people, the economy and the environment.
