NPC DELEGATION VISITS BIUST

The Commissioner General for the National Planning Commission (NPC), Mr. Kabelo Ebineng, and Deputy Commissioner General for Implementation Coordination, Ms. Bonolo Khumotaka, together with an NPC delegation, visited the Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST) in Palapye yesterday following an invitation from the University. The engagement provided an opportunity for BIUST to brief the Commission on its programmes in research, development and innovation, including technologies developed through its research activities such as drone technologies and the BIUST satellite programme.

The engagement also showcased a number of proposed investment projects spanning renewable energy and e-mobility, solar energy and EV batteries, student housing, the BIUST Technology Park, alternative building technologies, a data centre and an Astro-Tourism Park. The visit further explored opportunities for investment, technology transfer, skills development and stronger collaboration between academia, industry, Government and development partners in support of Botswana’s development priorities.

Continuation of the Capacity Building Programme

The ongoing CGE Model Capacity Building Programme continued with a focus on strengthening participants’ ability to apply evidence and analytical tools to real world policy challenges. The sessions emphasised asking the right policy questions, commissioning appropriate evidence, and interpreting analytical findings responsibly to support sound public decision making.

Participants were also introduced to systems thinking, highlighting the interconnected nature of government sectors, households, businesses and markets. The discussions underscored the importance of moving beyond siloed departmental approaches towards a whole-of-economy perspective, recognising that policy interventions in one sector can have broader economic effects.

The continued training is therefore equipping participants with the analytical skills and policy perspective required to use CGE modelling and related evidence effectively in policy formulation, economic analysis and development planning in Botswana.

The progress on the Mandunyane–Mathangwane road project reflects continued investment in infrastructure that connects communities and supports Botswana’s development.

A positive step for connectivity and development!

Government has opened 39km of the Mandunyane to Mathangwane Road Project to traffic, marking a major milestone in improving connectivity and access for communities in the North-East District.

This was revealed by the Project Engineer, Rre Kobamelo Kgoboko, during a tour of the road and a stakeholders’meeting held in Shashe Mooke Village yesterday.

The opening of this section will significantly reduce travel time, improve road safety, and enhance the movement of people, goods and services between Mandunyane, Shashe Mooke and Mathangwane.

The National Planning Commission and the Botswana Evaluation Society held a strategic engagement to explore collaboration and partnership opportunities aimed at strengthening Botswana’s planning and evaluation ecosystem.

This engagement emphasized the importance of integrating evaluation from the early stages of planning, strengthening evidence based policymaking, and using effective communication and advocacy to ensure that national plans and policies are understood and responsive to citizens’ needs.

The proposed collaboration seeks to promote innovation, inclusion and African rooted evaluation approaches, while supporting Botswana’s journey towards economic diversification and an export led economy.

The Fieldwork has officially begun.

The National Customer Satisfaction Survey team is on the ground and has arrived at their selective service points, ready to listen, engage and capture the experiences of Batswana as they access Government services.

This Survey is aimed at assessing citizen’s experiences and satisfaction with public service delivery across Government entities. It is also an opportunity to generate evidence which will inform service improvement implementation and reinforce accountability across the public sector.

STRENGTHENING BOTSWANA’S CAPACITY FOR EVIDENCE BASED POLICY ANALYSIS

The National Planning Commission, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme, on 17 August 2026 commenced a Computable General Equilibrium Model Capacity Building Programme aimed at strengthening national capacity in economic policy analysis and evidence based development planning.

The capacity building programme is designed to deepen Botswana’s practical understanding and application of Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) modelling as a tool for analysing the potential economical impact of different policies, scenarios and development interventions.

As part of the programme, participants are being equipped with both technical competencies and strategic policy perspectives, with the ultimate objective of building sustained national capacity to develop, operate and apply CGE models in support of policy formulation and development planning.

STRENGTHENING SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS AND SOCIAL PROTECTION FOR INCLUSIVE DEVELOPMENT

The Social Protection Task Team convened today to deliberate on strengthening social protection interventions and exploring sustainable pathways for improving the livelihoods of Batswana.

The meeting focused on a critical question: How can Batswana transition from long term dependence on Government support programmes towards sustainable and self-reliant livelihoods?

The meeting emphasized the need to critically examine the impact of existing interventions and identify practical approaches that can enable beneficiaries to graduate from social protection programmes and pursue sustainable economic opportunities.

The discussions seek to strengthen efforts towards sustainable livelihoods, greater self-reliance and improved socio-economic well-being, while ensuring that social protection programmes effectively contribute to empowering people to build secure and resilient futures.
