Trans Inclusive Series: What Does Trans Mean

Welcome to our Trans Inclusive Series, a space dedicated to learning, unlearning, and understanding gender diversity through education and conversation.

In a world where misinformation continues to fuel stigma and discrimination, creating accessible and affirming information about trans identities remains important.

Being trans is a valid and natural part of human diversity, and everyone deserves the freedom to define themselves and exist authentically with dignity and respect.

Through this series, we hope to encourage more informed, compassionate, and inclusive communities for trans and gender-diverse people.

Happy Africa Day

Africa is not only our geography, it’s our language, our histories, our resistance, our softness, our survival, and our becoming.

This Africa Day, Botswana Trans Initiative celebrates an Africa where all people, including trans and gender-diverse persons, are seen as part of the continent’s story, future, and freedom.

To be African is not to fit into one way of existing. Our continent has always been diverse, layered, complex, and deeply human. As conversations around identity, dignity, and human rights continue to grow across Africa, we remain hopeful for an Africa that embraces compassion over exclusion and humanity over prejudice.

Today, we honour the generations that came before us, the communities holding each other through difficult times, and the young people daring to imagine a freer and more inclusive continent for all.

Your body deserves care. Your identity deserves dignity. Your future deserves protection.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) are essential for everyone, including trans and gender-diverse people who continue to face barriers when accessing safe, affirming, and respectful healthcare services.

From STI prevention and testing to mental health support, contraception, and affirming healthcare access; everyone deserves the right to make informed decisions about their bodies and wellbeing without fear, stigma, or discrimination.

Healthcare should affirm, not exclude.

Botswana Trans Initiative welcomes and celebrates the recent ruling by Kenya’s High Court recognising that transgender persons have the right to have applications for changes to gender markers on official documents fairly considered.

This landmark decision is a powerful reminder of the importance of dignity, equality, privacy, and legal recognition for trans and gender-diverse people. Access to identity documents that reflect who people truly are is not merely administrative; it directly impacts safety, access to healthcare, employment opportunities, education, banking, travel, and the ability to move through everyday life without humiliation or discrimination.

We are proud of countries such as Kenya that continue to take progressive and human rights-based steps toward recognising and affirming the rights of transgender people. This victory also speaks to the power of long-term activism, community organising, and the courage of transgender persons who continue to challenge systems that deny their existence and dignity.

As BTI, we remain hopeful that more African countries will continue moving toward legal and social frameworks that protect the rights, humanity, and lived realities of trans and gender-diverse communities.

We celebrate this important milestone with our Kenyan siblings and acknowledge the years of resilience and advocacy that made this moment possible.

🏳️‍🌈 IDAHOBIT 2026 🏳️‍🌈

This past Saturday, we were honoured to join Rainbow Identity Association in commemorating IDAHOBIT 2026.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia is more than a date on the calendar. It is a reminder of the ongoing realities many LGBTQ+ people continue to face from discrimination and violence to exclusion, stigma, and denial of basic rights and dignity.

For trans and gender-diverse people especially, the day represents visibility, resistance, and the right to exist safely and authentically in all spaces. It is also a moment to celebrate the resilience of LGBTQ+ communities who continue to create spaces of care, solidarity, joy, and belonging despite the challenges many still face.

Thank you to everyone who gathered, connected, and commemorated with us.

International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

Democracy cannot truly exist if some people are forced to live unseen, unheard, or unsafe. This year’s IDAHOBIT theme, “At the Heart of Democracy,” reminds us that democracy is more than elections and institutions, it is about dignity, participation, protection, and belonging for all people, including trans and gender-diverse communities.

For many trans people, community becomes the first place where we experience affirmation, safety, care, and the freedom to exist authentically. In spaces where exclusion, discrimination, and misinformation continue to threaten our lives and rights, our communities remain important sites of resistance, healing, and collective action.

A democracy that leaves trans people behind is incomplete. True democracy listens to, protects, and values all its people.

WE’VE ALWAYS BEEN HERE. WE CAN’T BE ERASED.

“There is strength in community, and being fully myself is not something I need to apologise for.” - Sputla

For Sputla, truly feeling seen came from finding community, spaces where they no longer had to explain, shrink, or question themselves. That experience of belonging now fuels their work to ensure that the trans people in Botswana can thrive and live openly, safely, and authentically.

Because trans people have always existed.
And trans joy, resilience, and community cannot be erased.

A little throwback moment..

Conversations like these remain vital in ensuring that policies and institutions respond meaningfully to the lived realities of LGBTIQ+ communities, especially young people.

Inclusive policy is not a privilege, it is a responsibility.
