Today, Ministry of Health, Botswana launched Module 3 on Scientific Communication under the Botswana Data-to-Policy Capacity Strengthening Initiative.
Implemented with support from Vital Strategies and World Health Organization (WHO) in Botswana, the initiative is equipping health professionals and policymakers with the skills needed to transform data and research into clear, actionable messages that can inform policies, guide investments, and improve health outcomes.
As highlighted by WHO Botswana "Producing high-quality data and robust analyses is only part of the journey. Evidence achieves its intended impact when it is communicated clearly, effectively and persuasively to decision-makers."
This week's training is facilitated by experts from Zambia and Botswana, fostering South-South learning and knowledge exchange while strengthening participants' ability to develop policy briefs, communicate research findings, and translate evidence into action.
By investing in scientific communication, is helping ensure that valuable health data does not remain in reports and databases but informs decisions that improve people's lives.

WHO Botswana participated in the official opening of the One Health Workshop for Curriculum Developers and Subject Panelists organized by the Botswana University of Agriculture & Natural Resources (BUAN) and partners, supporting efforts to integrate principles into Botswana's basic education system. The workshop brings together educators, curriculum specialists and technical experts to explore how concepts linking human, animal and environmental health can be incorporated into secondary school curricula.

Representing WHO Country Office, Kentse Moakofhi, Team Lead for Emergency Preparedness and Response, delivered WHO's message of support for preparing future generations to address complex challenges such as climate change, zoonotic diseases, antimicrobial resistance, biodiversity loss and food insecurity through a approach.

By investing in education today, is laying the foundation for a healthier, safer and more sustainable future for people, animals and the environment. WHO remains committed to supporting the Government of Botswana and partners in advancing the agenda.

Cancer prevention and control is a shared responsibility.

Botswana jointly supported the Botswana Oncology Consultative Forum, convened by the Ministry of Health, Botswana in collaboration with the Rutgers Global Health Institute and its partners. The forum brought together government, health professionals, academia, development partners, civil society, cancer survivors, patient advocates and the private sector to identify priorities and accelerate action across Botswana's cancer care pathway, from prevention and early detection to treatment, survivorship and palliative care.

Held under the theme "Strengthening Botswana's Cancer Care Pathway: Access, Quality, Innovation and Sustainable Financing," the forum focused on identifying priorities and practical actions across the continuum of care, from prevention and early detection to diagnosis, treatment, palliative care and survivorship.

remains a growing public health challenge globally and across Africa. Accelerated action is needed to expand access to screening, diagnostic services, quality treatment and patient-centred care, while strengthening prevention through interventions such as vaccination, to***co control, healthy lifestyles and early detection programmes.

The WHO Representative to Botswana and SADC welcomed Botswana's continued commitment to strengthening cancer services and advancing . He emphasized the importance of prevention, early diagnosis, equitable access to quality care, strong cancer registries, research and multi-stakeholder partnerships in reducing the growing burden of cancer.

Together, we can reduce the burden of cancer, save lives and build a healthier future for all.

Strengthening regulatory systems is essential to protecting public health

World Health Organization Botswana joined the opening of the International Training Workshop on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) and Pharmacovigilance, hosted by the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA). The workshop brings together participants from 7 African countries to strengthen capacities in clinical trial oversight, patient safety, medicine regulation, and pharmacovigilance.

As African countries advance regulatory harmonization and implementation of the new Regional Strategy for the Regulation of Medical Products 2026-2035, investment in regulatory excellence becomes increasingly important. Strong regulatory systems help ensure that medicines, vaccines, and health technologies remain safe, effective, and of assured quality throughout their lifecycle.

WHO, through its Representative to Botswana and SADC, Dr Fabian Ndenzako, applauds BoMRA's leadership in advancing regulatory excellence and remains committed to supporting countries in building strong regulatory systems that promote innovation, ensure and strengthen trust in health products and technologies.

Learning across borders to accelerate the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B

WHO Botswana together with Ministry of Health, Botswana, UNAIDS, UNICEF Botswana and partners, welcomed delegations from Mozambique and Nigeria to Gaborone for a South-to-South learning exchange supported by the IAS - International AIDS Society.
The visit provides an opportunity for to share lessons from its journey towards eliminating the vertical transmission of , syphilis and hepatitis B, including integrating services within maternal and child health care, strengthening antenatal testing and retesting, improving laboratory systems and quality assurance, linking community and facility services, and ensuring continuity of care for mothers and infants.
Through technical discussions and visits to health facilities, participants explored how strong leadership, coordinated health systems, robust data systems and community engagement can help ensure that no mother or child is left behind.

By sharing experiences and adapting proven approaches, countries can strengthen their responses and move closer to a future where every child is born free from preventable infections.

World Patient Safety Day 2026 |

WHO Botswana joins the global community in observing World Patient Safety Day 2026 under the theme "Safe care for noncommunicable diseases" and the slogan "Safe care for life!"

People living with diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and other often require lifelong care involving multiple providers, medicines and services. Ensuring patient safety at every stage of the care journey, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment, follow-up and self-care, is essential to reducing avoidable harm and improving health outcomes.

As highlighted by World Health Organization African Region Director, Dr Mohamed Janabi, expanding access to NCD services must go hand in hand with improving their quality and safety. Strong primary health care, evidence-based practices, effective communication and empowered patients are all critical to safer care.
