MALE S*X WORKERS DESERVE RECOGNITION – SISONKE

Sisonke Botswana Organization has called for greater recognition and inclusion of male s*x workers, emphasizing that s*x work in Botswana is not solely a women’s issue but affects both men and women.

Speaking on behalf of the organisation, Tosh Legoreng highlighted that while female s*x workers are more visible and often dominate public discourse, male s*x workers remain largely hidden due to stigma, cultural expectations and fear of discrimination.

This has resulted in limited access to support systems, healthcare services and platforms to share their experiences.

Sisonke noted that economic pressures such as unemployment, poverty and the rising cost of living continue to push individuals into s*x work across all genders.

However, men are less likely to openly identify as s*x workers, making it more difficult for organisations and government programmes to reach them.

The organisation further raised concerns over shared risks within the industry, including exposure to violence, lack of legal protection, limited access to healthcare and ongoing mental health challenges driven by stigma and isolation.

For male s*x workers, these challenges are often intensified by societal perceptions around masculinity.

Sisonke Botswana stressed the need for inclusive policies and programmes that recognise all s*x workers equally, urging a shift in public discourse from judgment to understanding and support.

MESSAGE FROM SISONKE BOTSWANA ORGANIZATION

We are deeply unhappy and frustrated by the ongoing crisis of condom shortages across Botswana. This situation is unacceptable and extremely worrying. It is painful to see our communities especially young people, s*x workers and other vulnerable groups being put at risk simply because such a basic and essential health product is unavailable.

Sisonke Botswana Organization has tirelessly advocated for access to health services and s*xual rights, yet today we find ourselves facing a serious public health setback. The lack of condoms is not a minor issue, it is a life-and- death matter that threaten to reverse the progress Botswana has made in the fight against HIV and other STIs.

We cannot remain silent while our people are exposed to unnecessary risks. It is disheartening that in 2025, access to condoms is still a challenge in a country that once led Africa in HIV prevention. We demand urgent action, transparency and accountability from all responsible authorities.

This is a wake up call. Our communities deserve better.
S*xual health is a right not a privilege.

Sisonke Botswana at SASWA Conference in Sandton, South Africa 🇿🇦

Sisonke Botswana Organization is proud to share that our Director recently attended a vital regional conference hosted by SASWA (Southern Africa S*x Workers Alliance) in Sandton, South Africa.

The training focused on strengthening the capacity of s*x worker leaders to develop effective strategies for navigating the changing funding landscape in their respective countries — especially in response to the recent funding cuts from the U.S. and other international donors.

This gathering brought together key voices from across the region to build resilience, sustainability, and solidarity in our movements. At Sisonke Botswana, we are committed to ensuring that s*x worker-led initiatives continue to thrive and advocate for the rights, safety, and dignity of all s*x workers — even in the face of financial challenges.

Statement from Sisonke Botswana Organization

Sisonke Botswana Organization unequivocally condemns the alarming rise in the killings of women and children across Botswana. This devastating trend represents not only a tragic loss of precious lives but also a profound failure of our society to protect its most vulnerable members.

Violence against women and children is a grave violation of human rights and a critical public health crisis. The increasing number of these brutal acts reflects systemic issues rooted in gender inequality, social injustice, and inadequate protection mechanisms that require urgent and comprehensive intervention.

We call on all stakeholders government, law enforcement agencies, community leaders, and citizens to join forces in addressing the root causes of this violence. Immediate actions must include:
• Strengthening legal frameworks and enforcement to ensure perpetrators are held accountable.
• Providing accessible, trauma informed support services for survivors.
• Promoting education and awareness campaigns that challenge harmful cultural norms and stereotypes.
• Investing in prevention strategies that empower women and children and build safer communities.

Sisonke Botswana is committed to standing in solidarity with survivors and advocating for policies that safeguard lives and dignity. We urge all Batswana to reject violence and work collaboratively to build a future where women and children can live free from fear.

The time to act is now because every life matters.
