Day 3 Highlights

Day 3 Camp experience was powerful and enlightening, focusing on defilement and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

The Rakops Police led an important session, encouraging campers to speak up and report any form of inappropriate behavior. They emphasized that no one has the right to touch them in a way that makes them uncomfortable, involve them in sexual activities, or expose them to po*******hy. Campers were also guided on juvenile delinquency and the importance of making responsible life choices.

The S&CD officer on one hand expanded the discussion by outlining the four main types of GBV:

1. Physical abuse – hitting, choking, or kicking

2. Sexual abuse – unwanted touching or forced sexual acts

3. Economic abuse – neglecting basic needs and responsibilities

4. Emotional/Psychological abuse – insults, discrimination, and harmful words

She explained that abuse is often driven by factors such as substance abuse, uncontrolled anger, jealousy, peer pressure, and growing up in violent environments. Campers learnt that GBV can have serious and lasting consequences, including physical injury, emotional trauma, unintended pregnancy, infections, and even loss of life.

Most importantly, the session promoted respect, unity, and dignity for all
rgardless of tribe or background. Campers were encouraged to support one another and help build safe and respectful communities.

They were also reminded that help is always available. Cases of abuse can be reported to trusted adults and authorities such as the police, social workers, parents, guidance teachers, or the kgosi.

BOY CHILD CRY

Human Rights First
Let's shift our focus from punishment to prevention, and from judgment to support. Our boychild needs guidance, not labels. Instead of defining him by his mistakes, let's empower him with the tools and care to grow. Brandishing a knife is a cry for help - let's address the hurt, not just the behavior.

The narrative around gender-based violence has often cast men and boys as perpetrators, overlooking their potential as allies and victims too. Let's break this cycle and offer our boychild a chance to heal, learn, and thrive. By investing in their emotional well-being, we can prevent violence and nurture a generation of empathetic leaders.

Let's choose compassion over condemnation, and help our boychild become the solution, not the problem. It's time to support our boys, teach them healthy relationships, and show them that vulnerability is strength, not weakness. By doing so, we'll create a safer, more balanced society for all.🙏

For many years, the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) has primarily focused on women and children as victims, often leaving men and the boy child behind even in advocacy efforts. While women are the most affected by GBV, men and boys are also victims who are overlooked in many aspects.

Boys For Men, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that advocates for positive masculinity, empowerment, boys mentorship and role modeling exists to push the agenda of equality after realizing that the boy child and men have been left out in most advocacy efforts. In an interview, Dr Sukolukhulu
Dube the founder of Boys For Men revealed that though the organization receives a number of complaints from men decrying GBV in their homes, the numbers will always be low because he believes men do not have a safe space to report such issues.
