Day 3 Highlights
Day 3 Camp experience was powerful and enlightening, focusing on defilement and Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
The Rakops Police led an important session, encouraging campers to speak up and report any form of inappropriate behavior. They emphasized that no one has the right to touch them in a way that makes them uncomfortable, involve them in sexual activities, or expose them to po*******hy. Campers were also guided on juvenile delinquency and the importance of making responsible life choices.
The S&CD officer on one hand expanded the discussion by outlining the four main types of GBV:
1. Physical abuse – hitting, choking, or kicking
2. Sexual abuse – unwanted touching or forced sexual acts
3. Economic abuse – neglecting basic needs and responsibilities
4. Emotional/Psychological abuse – insults, discrimination, and harmful words
She explained that abuse is often driven by factors such as substance abuse, uncontrolled anger, jealousy, peer pressure, and growing up in violent environments. Campers learnt that GBV can have serious and lasting consequences, including physical injury, emotional trauma, unintended pregnancy, infections, and even loss of life.
Most importantly, the session promoted respect, unity, and dignity for all
rgardless of tribe or background. Campers were encouraged to support one another and help build safe and respectful communities.
They were also reminded that help is always available. Cases of abuse can be reported to trusted adults and authorities such as the police, social workers, parents, guidance teachers, or the kgosi.
Empowering young people to grow into responsible, respectful citizens. ✊
