Happy Friday friends, let's think about obesity is more than a physical Non-Communicable Disease, it is also a mental health issue. Many people living with obesity struggle with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and social isolation due to weight stigma, while on the other hand, stress, trauma and depression can lead to emotional eating, creating a difficult cycle.

This is why working with a counselor is so important, because a counselor helps to identify the root emotional issues behind unhealthy eating patterns and eating disorders, such as unresolved trauma, anxiety or low self-worth, and teaches healthier ways to cope, heal your relationship with food, and rebuild self-esteem.

As part of our continued engagement around this year’s World Mental Health Day theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” we had the privilege of facilitating a caregivers’ debriefing session in Molepolole yesterday.

Family caregivers of people living with mental health conditions hold experiences that are often overlooked, yet their journeys offer valuable insight into the realities of supporting someone living with a mental health condition.

Our session created an opportunity to reflect on the emotional demands of caregiving, the importance of self-awareness, drawing strength from faith, and approaching loved ones with greater compassion and understanding.

We also explored how they can navigate challenges within healthcare services while protecting their own emotional wellbeing, sustaining hope, and continuing to provide support without losing sight of their personal needs.

This year’s theme reminds us that meaningful change begins when we listen to the people closest to these experiences and allow their realities to inform the support we provide.

Caregivers deserve to be heard, supported, and included in conversations that shape mental health care. Their experiences matter, and their voices can help build more compassionate and responsive services.

We sincerely thank Scottish Livingstone Hospital for hosting us and ensuring the involvement of the Molepolole residents who are caregivers in this important engagement.

Today we acknowledge the enormous supportive role that hospices and palliative care facilities play in the lives of so many families around the world.

It is often during one of the most painful experiences of a family’s life, that they will encounter staff from a hospice or palliative facility. The support, guidance and comfort that these caregivers provide to both the patients and their families, is priceless.

Your lived experience matters. South Africa will join the global community on 10 October 2026 to commemorate World Mental Health Day under the theme “Lived experiences heard: real changes.”

The day highlights the importance of listening to people with mental health conditions, recognising their experiences and ensuring their voices help shape meaningful support and care.
