Chithuen Phendhey Association Chithuen Phendhey Association is a prominent Civil Society Organization dedicated to cultivating a compassionate and resilient society

Established in 2011 under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, Chithuen Phendhey Association (CPA Bhutan) is a prominent Civil Society Organization dedicated to cultivating a compassionate and resilient society. At its core, the association envisions a nation where the well-being of every individual, family, and community is not just prioritized but safeguarded, creating an environment fre

e from the enduring impacts of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma, addiction, and mental health disparities. The CPA Bhutan was established in response to the growing concern about the severe negative impact of addiction, particularly drugs and alcohol, on the overall health and well-being of individuals and society at large. Initially founded as a response to drug and alcohol problems, the association initiated numerous services and interventions at the treatment and intervention levels. However, with accumulated experiences and learning over time, it became evident that intervention and treatment alone were insufficient. There arose a realization that addressing the root causes and factors contributing to mental health issues and addiction was paramount. Over time, the association expanded its focus beyond mere intervention and treatment, actively engaging in preventative measures to address the contributing factors to mental health issues and addiction. The experience gained underscored the importance of a holistic approach that goes beyond treating the symptoms, emphasizing the need to prevent the underlying causes. Furthermore, the Chithuen Phendhey Association is privileged to operate under the esteemed Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King. This patronage not only highlights the significance of the organization but also emphasizes a shared commitment to fostering a resilient community. The association, with the support of His Majesty the King, continues to strive towards its mission of not only addressing the immediate challenges posed by addiction but also preventing the root causes to create lasting and enduring well-being within the community.

Today's Drug Prevention and Awareness Program brought vital awareness to two schools.

The morning began with a meaningful session at Sengdhyen Lower Secondary School, where teachers and students engaged in open, honest conversations about the impact of Adverse Childhood Experiences, substance use and the critical importance of early intervention.

The afternoon carried us to Tash*thang Middle Secondary School, Samtse, where educators and students came together to explore healthy coping strategies, understand the risks of drug abuse, and strengthen the protective factors that shield young lives.

"This session opened our eyes to issues we see every day but rarely discuss openly. The tools and strategies shared today will help us better support our students not just inside the classroom, but in their lives beyond it. We are grateful." โ€” Teacher

"I never knew how much our early experiences could affect our choices later in life. Today made me feel like I am not alone, and that there are people who truly care about our future. I will carry this with me." โ€” Student

One school at a time, one conversation at a time โ€” we are nurturing a generation empowered with knowledge, resilience, and the courage to say no. Our schools are our strongest frontlines.

As part of the ongoing Drug Prevention and Awareness Program, the CPA team conducted a session on Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) for the health workers of Dorokha 10-Bedded Hospital on 30th May 2026.

๐Ÿ’ก ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) are potentially traumatic events in childhood that have lasting impacts on health and behaviour. Equipping health workers with this knowledge enables them to provide compassionate, trauma-informed care and support those at risk of substance use.

The session provided health workers with valuable insights into the link between early-life adversity and substance use, strengthening their ability to identify and support vulnerable individuals in our communities.

๐Ÿ’ช When health workers understand ACEs, the entire community benefits. Families receive more empathetic support, vulnerable children are identified and protected sooner, and the link between childhood trauma and adult substance use is broken through timely, informed intervention. A trauma-aware health workforce is the foundation of a healthier, drug-free Bhutan.

The CPA team continues its dedicated efforts โ€” building knowledge, building resilience, and building a healthier Bhutan. ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡น๐ŸŒฟ

This afternoon, our program took a powerful turn as we delved into the topic of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) bringing this critical conversation to the officials of Bhutan Power Corporation.

๐Ÿข It was a privilege to engage with BPC's dedicated team professionals who power our nation daily, yet like all of us, carry the invisible weight of lived experiences that shape who we are today.

Understanding ACEs is not just a health conversation it is a human one. From childhood trauma to its long-term effects on behavior, mental health, and substance use, the session opened eyes, softened hearts, and encouraged honest reflection in a safe and supportive space. ๐Ÿ’กโค๏ธ

We witnessed something truly special this afternoon corporate officials pausing, listening, and engaging with a level of vulnerability and openness that reminded us: Healing begins with awareness. โœจ

Because a workforce that understands trauma is a workforce that leads with empathy and that makes for stronger institutions and stronger communities. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡น

Together, we are building a Bhutan that heals, understands, and rises. ๐Ÿ™

Today, our Drug Prevention and Awareness Program reached two schools in Dorokha โ€” starting with the Dorokha Primary School in the morning and Dorokha Central School in the afternoon. The sessions brought teachers and students together to explore the deep connections between adverse childhood experiences, addiction, and community wellbeing.

"Since we work with young people, today's session was very informative and highly engaging. We thought it might disrupt our education hours, but we made the right decision by attending. The topics covered were relevant and practical โ€” we look forward to applying what we've learned in our day-to-day work with young people." โ€” Teacher

"Today we learned that addiction is a complex disease that doesn't only affect us โ€” it also impacts those around us. This was an eye-opening session that helped us understand the far-reaching effects of substance use on individuals, families, and communities. Beyond avoiding substances ourselves, we also have a responsibility to support and stand by those who are affected. This session has inspired us to be more compassionate and aware in our interactions with others."โ€” Student

Every generation has the power to break the cycle. When young people understand the science behind addiction and learn refusal skills early, they carry that knowledge forward โ€” into their homes, their friendships, and their communities. ๐Ÿ’š

Afternoon | Sang Nga Choling Lower Secondary School Students, teachers, and local government officials were made aware on how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) shape child development and increase vulnerability to substance use โ€” and how parents can be the strongest protective factor in their child's life.

"Today's session on ACEs was truly eye-opening. I never realized how deeply early childhood experiences could shape my child's future โ€” including their risk of substance use. It made me reflect on my own home environment and motivates me to be more present, more patient, and more aware. Thank you for reminding us that we, as parents, are the first and most powerful line of protection for our children." A Participant's Voice

It was a session that stirred reflection, sparked honest conversations, and reminded every parent of the profound difference they make every day.

Drug prevention is a shared responsibility, and every layer of society has a role to play. ๐Ÿ™
