Save the Children Bhutan Save the Children is the world’s largest independent international NGO for children. Save the Children completed 31 years of programming in Bhutan in 2013.

Following a mutual agreement with the Royal Government of Bhutan, Save the Children USA – Bhutan Program was established in 1982, as an initiative to aid and assist the children and community in Edi in Zhemgang. What began as a one-community program with the establishment of a pre-school, a health post, an 18 km mule track, a community centre, a suspension bridge, safe drinking water supply and irrigation canals in Edi in 1982, has today, culminated into being a national partner for the Royal Government of Bhutan, providing financial support and technical assistance to relevant government sectors, local NGOs and other partners, in providing services to the children in Bhutan. Save the Children International formally registered in Bhutan from 1st January 2011 with the signing of the new Memorandum of Understanding between SCI and the Royal Government of Bhutan for the period – 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2015. The focuses of Save the Children in Bhutan are enhancing access to Adolescent development, youth advocacy, awareness and education, child protection and Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCD). A recent yet critical area of intervention has been the advocacy and initiation for Disaster Risk Reduction and Response.

Today, Mr. Arshad Malik, Asia Regional Director of Save the Children International, called on the Hon’ble Minister, the Secretary, and key programme officials of the Ministry of Education and Skills Development.

The Ministry expressed appreciation for Save the Children’s continued support to Bhutan’s education sector, while Mr. Malik expressed appreciation for the longstanding partnership.

Discussions centered on strengthening the ongoing collaboration, with a focus on future opportunities in youth vocational programs, disaster risk reduction, inclusive education, and climate resilience in education with the continued expansion of early childhood care and development.

Mr. Malik also visited two inclusive schools in Paro and an ECCD center in Thimphu.

Save the Children International’s Asia Regional Director Pays Courtesy Call on the Prime Minister of Bhutan

On 7th September 2026, Mr. Arshad Malik, Asia Regional Director of Save the Children International, paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Bhutan during his inaugural official visit to the Kingdom.

During the meeting, Mr. Malik conveyed his profound gratitude to His Majesty The King, the Royal Government, and the people of Bhutan for the enduring partnership between the Royal Government of Bhutan and Save the Children in serving children and communities since 1982.

The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening this partnership to advance child health, education, and overall well-being across Bhutan. They further explored strategic opportunities to enhance inclusive, quality Early Childhood Care and Development, and foster partnerships in climate financing, disaster risk reduction and anticipatory actions.

The 10-day Training of Trainers (ToT) on Save the Children’s Inclusive Ready to Learn (IRTL) Package was conducted in Paro from 7th – 16th August 2026, bringing together district education officers and facilitators from Thimphu, Paro, Wangduephodrang, Chhukha, Samtse, Thimphu Thromde, Phuntsholing Thromde and members from BECEDA to strengthen inclusive ECCD practices.

Through practical activities, demonstrations, micro-teaching, role plays and reflection, participants strengthened their knowledge and skills in child development, inclusive emergent literacy and mathematics, and social-emotional learning. The Stronger Together sessions further equipped participants with practical approaches to engage caregivers and support children’s learning and development at home.
The training strengthened participants’ confidence and capacity to create more inclusive, responsive and supportive learning environments, particularly for children with disabilities.

Together, we are building a future where every child is valued, supported and empowered to learn, participate and thrive.

About the role

🎓 What we’re looking for
