Save the Children Bhutan

Save the Children Bhutan Save the Children is the world’s largest independent international NGO for children. Save the Children completed 31 years of programming in Bhutan in 2013.

Following a mutual agreement with the Royal Government of Bhutan, Save the Children USA – Bhutan Program was established in 1982, as an initiative to aid and assist the children and community in Edi in Zhemgang. What began as a one-community program with the establishment of a pre-school, a health post, an 18 km mule track, a community centre, a suspension bridge, safe drinking water supply and ir

rigation canals in Edi in 1982, has today, culminated into being a national partner for the Royal Government of Bhutan, providing financial support and technical assistance to relevant government sectors, local NGOs and other partners, in providing services to the children in Bhutan. Save the Children International formally registered in Bhutan from 1st January 2011 with the signing of the new Memorandum of Understanding between SCI and the Royal Government of Bhutan for the period – 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2015. The focuses of Save the Children in Bhutan are enhancing access to Adolescent development, youth advocacy, awareness and education, child protection and Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCD). A recent yet critical area of intervention has been the advocacy and initiation for Disaster Risk Reduction and Response.

Strengthening Community Voices Through Advocacy

As part of the SKPA Project, Save the Children brought together community representatives, programme staff, and partners in Paro for a five-day Community-Led Monitoring (CLM) Advocacy Training.

The training equipped participants from with practical skills to transform community-generated evidence into meaningful advocacy action. Through sessions on CLM data analysis, advocacy strategy development, stakeholder mapping, storytelling, and monitoring and evaluation, participants identified priority issues affecting children and developed action plans to address them.

By strengthening the capacity of communities to advocate for change, the SKPA Project is helping ensure that children’s voices and lived experiences inform policies, programmes, and decisions that help deliver equitable HIV and related health services.

Together, we are advancing accountability, participation, and lasting change for children and their communities.

EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS STARTS BEFORE THE GROUND SHAKES

When an earthquake strikes, every second counts especially for children and persons with disabilities. Being prepared can save lives.

✔️ Before: Create a family safety plan, prepare emergency supplies, and ensure evacuation plans include children with different needs.
✔️ During: Remember Drop, Cover, and Hold On. If this is not possible, use the safest protective action available and support others when you can.
✔️ After: Check on children, assist those who need help evacuating, and make sure everyone is accounted for.

At Save the Children, we believe that disaster preparedness must be inclusive. Every child deserves to be safe, protected, and prepared during emergencies.

Take time today to discuss your family’s earthquake safety plan. Preparedness is a shared responsibility.
