Gross National Happiness was propounded by His Majesty the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck in 1970 which later became the main guiding philosophy of Bhutan’s development process. He stated, ‘Gross National Happiness is more important than Gross National Product’. Through this, we understand that His Majesty envisioned that happiness is the ultimate end desire that every Bhutanese must enjoy if not every human being. This noble philosophy has come as an alternative to conventional economic growth which has seriously flawed over the centuries. The philosophy describes development as a continuous process towards a balance between material and non-material needs of individuals and society. Thus, the concept of GNH introduced by Fourth King states that ‘GNH stresses collective happiness to be addressed directly through public policies’ in which happiness becomes an explicit criterion in projects and programmes is enshrined in Article 9 of the constitution of Kingdom of Bhutan.
Over the decades, Bhutan has been challenged by some issues like unemployment, deterioration of cultural values in youths, and social issues such as drug abuse, sexual harassment, depression, su***de, teenage pregnancy, loss of community cohesion, and rural-urban migration. The certain level of challenges is observable in eastern Bhutan as well. To this, as per the mandate and platform provided by GNH Centre Bhutan, Sherubtse College would like to set up the GNH Youth Club that would work in our small way to mitigate and positively respond to the issues infusing GNH values, thus, promoting the values of GNH.
In the words of the Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuck;
"I feel that there must be some convergence among nations on the idea of what the primary objective of development and progress should be - something that GNH seeks to bring about," and further "There cannot be enduring peace, prosperity, equality and brotherhood in this world if our aims are so separate and divergent especially as the world shrinks to a global village."
Thus, it has become imperative for every individual and educational institute to work towards the fulfillment of this vision of His Majesty the King.
HRH Ashi Kezang Choden Wangchuck, President of the GNH Centre Bhutan mentions;
“Although the GNH model has indeed, served us well…we do not claim that it is the best option. It has its limitations. We see it as a dynamic design that must be constantly enriched and improved with the help of people from all walks of life who bring with them immense experience and knowledge with a shared inspiration to create a better world. In this regard, we are most heartened by the interest the world has taken in our development approach.”
Motivated by visionary mandates, Sherubtse GNH Youth Club aspires to initiate awareness and social service activities in our surrounding.
Sherubtse College, the oldest and largest premier educational institute accepts the fact that the UN declared 20th March as the International Day of Happiness to be observed globally. The GNH Centre Bhutan (GNHCB) also promoted 11th November as the National Day of Happiness to pay tribute to the founder of GNH, Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Propelled by these mandates, Sherubtse GNH Youth Club was founded on 5th March, 2019 by former GNH module tutor, Mr. Dorji Phuntsho, currently Assistant Lecturer in History and Mr. Leki Dorji, Student, BA in English & Dzongkha who attended the GNH Youth Leadership Workshop organized by the GNH Centre Bhutan. It was inaugurated on 20th March, 2019 coinciding with the International Happiness Day graced by Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Yezer. The club was established with support from the GNH Centre Bhutan and approved by College Management Committee (CMC). The club has sixty seven registered college students with Mr. Leki Dorji as the first Coordinator. Sherubtse GNH Youth Club propose to carry out events to mark this date which is both symbolic and important to Bhutanese. This club will also initiate local and regional important activities that are related to the GNH and further promote social and cultural cohesiveness in the region.
Sherubtse GNH Youth Clubwould function under the auspices of the GNH Centre Bhutan (GNHCB), a non-profit civil society organization under the President of Her Royal Highness Ashi Kezang Choden Wangchuck. It was registered under the Civil Society Organization Authority of Bhutan on 18 October 2012. The GNHCB was established as a tribute to take forward the vision and philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH) as introduced by His Majesty the Fourth King Jigme Singye Wangchuck in the early 1970s. Sherubtse GNH Youth Club would support the GNHCB Led activities both of national and international program.
