ANZAC Day | Butter Lamp Offering at Wangditshe

On 26 April 2026, the Bhutan Australia Awards Alumni Association will gather at Sangaygang to offer butter lamps in solemn remembrance of the courage and sacrifice of Australian and New Zealand service members.

In Bhutanese tradition, the a butter lamp symbolises the dispelling of darkness and the offering of light to those who have passed. On this ANZAC Day, we carry that light in honour of all who have served and those who continue to serve.

As we make our way to Wangditshe, we will also be plogging picking up litter along the trail as a small but meaningful act of care for the land we are grateful to call home. Honouring the fallen also means preserving the world they fought for.

In remembrance. In gratitude. In peace.

๐ŸŒบ Lest we forget.

The Bhutan Australia Alumni Association (BAAA) Executive Committee Members (ECM) came together for a focused meet-up over the weekend to review past efforts and plan the way forward.

The discussion centered on how to better engage our members, create meaningful opportunities, and strengthen connections within our community. There was also a clear emphasis on building deeper ties between Bhutan and Australia through shared initiatives and collaboration.

It was a productive session filled with ideas, honest reflections, and a shared commitment to move ahead with purpose.
The ECM members would like to acknowledge the support of Australia Awards country office for making the workshop/meet-up possible .

๐ŸŒ Celebrating International Day of Education!

Meet Rizka Suhani, an Australia Awards alumna from Indonesia, who completed a Master of Education at the University of Adelaide in December.

Through the Australia Awards Scholarship, Rizka gained opportunities for professional growth and cultural exchange.

โ€œThe scholarship enabled me to deepen my understanding of educational systems and their impacts on diverse communities through meaningful academic study and research,โ€ she says.

From volunteering as an Indonesian Language Learning Ambassador to attending the DEVED 2025 Conference in Melbourne, her journey reflects the power of education to transform lives and communities.

๐Ÿ“š Education opens doors, builds bridges, and creates lasting impact. Today, we celebrate scholars like Rizka who are shaping a brighter future through learning.

This year, the Bhutan Australia Alumni Association proudly supported two landmark disability awareness events across Bhutan:

September 22 โ€“ International Week of the Deaf
Wangsel Institute for the Deaf came alive with a vibrant Sports Feast, graced by our Honourable Member of Parliament, Save the Children representatives, the Chief DEO, and proud parents. Together, we celebrated deaf culture, talent, and the power of inclusion.

December 3 โ€“ International Day of Persons with Disabilities
At Tendruk Central School, Samtse, 100 participants engaged in awareness sessions, policy discussions, and disability simulations, deepening their commitment to inclusive education.
From celebrating deaf culture to advancing inclusive practices, BAAA remains dedicated to building a Bhutan where every voice matters and every person can thrive.

Thank you to all our partners, volunteers, and communities for making these celebrations impactful! ๐Ÿ™
