Equitable , and (WASH) access is a cornerstone of what makes people resilient, and resilient people are integral to making systems more climate resilient. Gender equality, disability and social inclusion ( ) is critical to climate-resilient WASH – but why and how?

This latest brief in our climate resilience series shares evidence from partners and projects across Asia Pacific that inclusive and accessible approaches increase coping mechanisms and adaptive capacities, providing a multiplier effect that benefits everybody and supports positive outcomes far beyond WASH.

Despite this, many people face barriers to WASH access and decision-making due to social and gender inequalities, exacerbating their vulnerability to risks and impacts of climate change. This brief identifies Social, Habitat, Institutional, Financial and Technical barriers and provides stepping stones to incrementally SHIFT these to enablers.

Sanitation and hygiene in healthcare centres have seen significant improvements nationwide in recent years according to local leaders and health officials. They attribute this to the introduction of the Water and Sanitation for Health Facility Improvement Tool or the WASH FIT programme. However, they are now calling for more inclusive facilities to better accommodate persons with disabilities, the elderly and children.

Ministry of Health in partnership with SNV Bhutan is organising a National WASH in Healthcare Facilities learning event from Dec 13-15 in Phuntsholing. The opening was graced by Dasho Drugpa Phuntsholing, Chukha.

‘’We achieved ODF, and now we need to ensure it is sustained, plans are aligned in sustaining our odf status. Making WASH FIT gender inclusive and disable friendly is equally important. Going forward the post odf strategy and initiatives are important. " Dasho Drungpa

During the events, participants will share the best practices, discussing challenges, and identifying solutions to enhance WASH standards in healthcare facilities and improve post-ODF status in communities.
Through the discussions, promote gender-responsive and inclusive WASH services in healthcare facilities, ensuring that they are safe, hygienic, accessible to all, and equipped to provide effective care. The group will discuss the progress of the Rural Sanitation and Hygiene Programme (RSAHP) and WASH FIT assessments across all 20 dzongkhags and develop strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of these initiatives.

Over 60 participants consisting of DT Thrizins, Gup, Dzongkhag Public Health Officers, Health Assistants and Tshogpas from 20 Dzongkhags, representatives from Disabled Persons Organizations, officials from Royal Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Water and Sanitation Division, Ministry Of infrastructure and Transport are attending the learning event.

November 21st marked 15 years of an enduring partnership between the Australian Government, the Royal Government of Bhutan and SNV that has improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services for some 215,000 Bhutanese.
