What happens when women come together to design solutions for challenges they face every day?
From 8–10 April 2026, that question came alive at the Women’s Hackathon 2026 in Thimphu.
Hosted by the Department of Employment and Entrepreneurship under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment in partnership with UNDP, the hackathon welcomed 83 women from across Bhutan to design innovative after-school childcare solutions.
Over three days at the Startup Centre in Changzamtog, Thimphu, ideas turned into prototypes, and strangers quickly became collaborators. Through workshops, mentoring, and long hours of discussion, participants designed solutions rooted in lived experience, care, and practicality.
Two ideas stood out:
🏆 ZangToen Care Hub
A structured after-school childcare and transport service designed to give parents peace of mind and children safe, reliable care. The team bagged a prize of Nu 500,000.
🥈 AumNyamro (Astral)
A peer-to-peer childcare exchange model built on trust and community support among working mothers, earning Nu 200,000 in prize money.
Both teams will now continue their journey with six months of incubation support in partnership with Impact Hub Thimphu.
More than a competition, this was a space where women shaped solutions for a challenge that affects them the most.
This initiative was made possible through the project, "Accelerating support for quality and inclusive soical protectio, managed migration and employment systems in Bhutan", funded by the Joint SDG Fund.
The project supports the Global Accelerator on Jobs and Social Protection for Just Transitions, and is a partnership between UNDP, UN Bhutan, UNICEF Bhutan and the World Bank.
