Consider the journey of Tshering, a villager from Phayum gewog. Once a cowherd and paddy field worker, he ventured into incense trading without formal education, carrying sacks of powder across Kaliphu and Darjeeling. Through sheer perseverance, he transformed from a third-party seller into a full-fledged manufacturer by 2017. His enterprise was not only about profit โ€“ it was about responsibility. Cognizant of the environment, he reinvested his earnings to plant over 11,000 saplings, ensuring that his legacy is one of both growth and conservation. Tsheringโ€™s story is a testament: entrepreneurship is not reserved for the privileged โ€“ it is the triumph of imagination, resilience, and conviction.

Now, it is your turn. The mountain may be tall, but the summit awaits those who dare to climb.

The workshop ๐ˆ๐ง๐ง๐จ๐ฏ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ ๐ข๐ง ๐๐ฎ๐ข๐ฅ๐๐ข๐ง๐  ๐’๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ž๐ ๐Š๐ง๐จ๐ฐ๐ฅ๐ž๐๐ ๐ž unfolded not as a mere procession of lectures, but as a subtle choreography of human encounter. What lingered beyond the formal sessions was not the data points or the digital repositories, but the ineffable texture of communion. Familiar colleagues greeted one another with embraces that carried the weight of shared journeys, while newcomers, initially hesitant, leaned into dialogue that soon blossomed into genuine exchange.

The dayโ€™s program โ€“ spanning the Buddhist Digital Resource Centerโ€™s monumental preservation efforts, the Treasury of Livesโ€™ biographical tapestry, the American Museum of Natural Historyโ€™s reimagining of cultural exhibitions, the Loden Foundationโ€™s vast documentation of Bhutanese heritage, and the Tsadra Foundationโ€™s cultivation of contemplative scholarship โ€“ was rich in intellectual substance. Yet, the true resonance lay in the interstices: in laughter that punctuated scholarly discourse, in silences that brimmed with curiosity, in the spontaneous weaving of connections across disciplines and geographies.

In that gathering, learning transcended the cerebral and entered the realm of the affective. It was proof that the most enduring lessons are often delivered not through slides or charts, but through the simple, profound act of meeting, of recognizing oneself in another, and of allowing proximity to ripen into trust.

With deep gratitude, we extend our appreciation to all the speakers โ€“ Jann Ronis, Karma Gongde, Alex Gardner, Tierney Brown, Dorji Gyeltshen and Karma Phuntsho, for their erudition, generosity, and vision. Equally, we acknowledge the audience whose attentive presence and spirited participation animated the day.

09/03/2026

In the frost-kissed meadows of Gangtey Valley, where generations of farmers have sustained themselves through toil and tradition, a quiet yet profound transformation began in 2017.

Khemdro Dairy, envisioned by Sherab Dorji, emerged not merely as a business but as a social enterprise rooted in empathy and resilience. Having grown up amidst the rigors of rural life โ€“ hauling water, gathering firewood, and tending fields โ€“ Sherab carried with him an indelible understanding of hardship. While studying abroad, he felt an inexorable pull to return home, determined to create a sustainable venture that would empower smallholder farmers. The path was fraught with obstacles: dairy is a perishable, unforgiving industry, and financial institutions were reluctant to invest. Yet, the Loden Foundationโ€™s Spring Call for Entrepreneurs in 2018 became the pivotal lifeline. With its support, Khemdro Dairy evolved from a fragile idea into a structured enterprise, producing cheese, butter, yogurt, and ice cream, while embedding fairness at its core โ€“ guaranteeing farmers a minimum price and sharing 40% of profits with them.

Today, Khemdro Dairy has scaled with advanced packaging technologies, diversified its product line, integrated over a hundred farmers, and created youth employment opportunities, all while nurturing the dream of one day including all 550 households of Gangtey Valley in its value chain.

It is precisely such narratives that exemplify the transformative power of entrepreneurship when vision is met with timely support. The ๐ƒ๐จ๐„๐„-๐‹๐จ๐๐ž๐ง ๐’๐ฉ๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐‚๐š๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ฎ๐ฌ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐š๐ฅ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ” is now open, offering aspiring entrepreneurs the opportunity to turn their aspirations into enduring success stories. The Department of Employment & Entrepreneurship (DoEE), Ministry of Industry, Commerce & Employment (MoICE), together with the Loden Foundation, is presenting a blended financing package that combines interest free loans with a non-repayable derisking fund. This year also heralds the launch of the Loden Womenโ€™s Enterprise Window, supported by the Bronwen and Brian Mills Education Trust, which provides dedicated capital for women entrepreneurs along with international mentoring through the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women.

The late Gรฉrard Tardy never sought recognition for his generosity. His grace was as profound as his benevolence. A week ago, when some of us contemplated over naming a programme or an award in his honour, Anne Tardy reminded us, โ€œHe wouldnโ€™t have liked that.โ€ Those words capture Gรฉrardโ€™s essence โ€“ a man whose life was defined not by accolades, but by character, selflessness, and humility.

Gรฉrard Tardy first came to Bhutan in 1999, beginning what would become a lifelong commitment to its people. What started as a journey of curiosity grew into a deep devotion. He believed in Bhutanese youth even before they believed in themselves, and from that faith emerged the Loden Entrepreneurship Programme.

From the outset, Gรฉrard Tardyโ€™s involvement was deeply personal. He was never content to remain a distant benefactor. Instead, he taught, mentored, and worked alongside the entrepreneurs he supported. Over the years, he guided more than 320 beneficiaries, becoming to many a paternal presence โ€“ a steady believer whose faith in their potential often preceded their own. His counsel was wise, his expectations exacting, and his encouragement unfailingly generous. In his constancy, he embodied a leadership that was both demanding and tender.

The true measure of Gรฉrard Tardyโ€™s life is reflected in the far-reaching impact of his kindness. Those he once guided now guide others. Scholarship recipients have returned to strengthen their communities. The global network he cultivated continues to embody the spirit of generosity. His legacy is not set in stone but rather lives on in the people he encountered. He remains, without doubt, a continuum of opportunity, aspiration, and compassion.

Today, Gรฉrard Tardyโ€™s name lives on through his family, friends and the countless lives he touched. His absence is felt across borders, yet the work he set in motion endures โ€“ through programmes, scholarships, and relationships that will continue to persist for generations.

In remembrance of our esteemed trustee, Loden Foundation has inaugurated a memorial donation page to perpetuate the endeavours to which Gรฉrard Tardy devoted his life with unwavering dedication. Through this initiative, future generations will be empowered to embody the compassion and conviction that were the hallmarks of his character.

For those who wish to extend the generosity Gรฉrard so profoundly exemplified or leave a message in his memory, please visit the memorial donation page: https://www.loden.org/honouring-gerard-tardy/
