Sepsis is life-threatening—the body's extreme response to infection turns on its own organs. It can happen fast to anyone.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐬: 49 million cases and 11 million deaths worldwide each year, 85% in low- and middle-income countries.

𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐧: A JDWNRH study found a 56% mortality rate among sepsis patients (41 of 73).

At today's observance of World Sepsis Day, WHO Representative Dr Bhupinder Kaur Aulakh reminded us that the fight against sepsis starts before a patient is critical—with safe water, sanitation, vaccination, and quality health services.

• Sepsis is 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞—infection control, safe childbirth, vaccination, hygiene.
• Sepsis is 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 when caught early—every minute matters.
• Investing in sepsis means investing in 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐬𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬.

𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐁𝐡𝐮𝐭𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠:

1. National sepsis team formed.
2. First national sepsis guideline & flowcharts developed.
3. Sepsis learning module launched on openKGUMSB.
4. Marking World Sepsis Day since 2024.

Today, health workers from JDWNRH, Lungtenphu Hospital, KGUMSB, and nursing students from various institutes gathered at Thimphu Deluxe for a full day of observation and CME on sepsis—from recognition and triage to lab diagnostics, surgical source control, and emergency care. Because every skill sharpened today means a life saved tomorrow.

WHO stands with the Ministry of Health to strengthen sepsis capacity, surveillance, and access to quality diagnostics and care.

At the Ministerial Roundtable on “Human Resources for Health: Equity in Specialized Care”, Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, Minister of Health, , said:

“Our priorities are threefold.

1⃣ We will strengthen postgraduate specialist training to progressively meet our workforce needs, while remaining grateful for the support of India, Bangladesh, Thailand and Sri Lanka in educating our doctors and health workers.

2⃣ We will strengthen retention through structured career pathways, pragmatic incentives, performance management and continuing professional development, particularly for those serving in regional and rural areas, guided by HRH studies.

3⃣ We will scale up digital referrals and teleconsultation into a fully networked model linking national, regional, district and community services.”

A historic public health milestone celebrated at : WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus felicitated Bhutan for eliminating dog-mediated human rabies as a public health problem.

Bhutan is the first country in the WHO South-East Asia Region and only the second country globally, after Mexico, to achieve this milestone. 🐕🌏

👩🏽‍🍼 Sustaining the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus for a decade since validation
👶🏾 Continuing its commitment to newborn and child survival even after achieving the SDG targets for neonatal and under-five mortality.
