Meeting with FAO Team (UN Office, Thimphu) and Mr. Kojima (TLAG, Japan)

Today, the Bhutan Stroke Foundation (BSF) Secretariat held two separate but highly productive meetings with valued development partners: the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Thimphu Office and Mr. Kojima, Think Locally and Act Globally (TLAG), Japan.

The FAO team and Mr. Kojima, TLAG have expressed their continued interest and support toward the establishment of Agriculture Therapy Centres for post-stroke rehabilitation in Thimphu, Chukha, Mongar (Drepung) and Khaling. The meeting focused on the inception and conceptual framework of Agriculture Therapy as an innovative post-care rehabilitation model for stroke survivors in Bhutan.

Agriculture Therapy is an emerging approach in the country that aims to provide structured rehabilitation through meaningful engagement in agricultural activities. This model is designed to support stroke survivors beyond hospital discharge, addressing a critical gap in post-acute care services.

While the Ministry of Health and relevant government agencies continue to provide essential acute care and initial rehabilitation services, there remains a limited facilities for post rehabilitation and long-term community-based recovery support.

In response to this gap, the Bhutan Stroke Foundation is taking the lead in developing non medical post rehabilitation based on Agriculture Therapy where stroke survivors can receive continuous rehabilitation, care, shelter, and livelihood opportunities through agriculture-based engagement.

The initiative aims to support stroke survivors holistically, physically, mentally, socially and economically while also promoting dignity, independence and community reintegration for both patients and their families. The project is planned to be implemented in Chukha, Thimphu, Mongar and Trashigang, contributing to both the sustainability of the Foundation and the wellbeing of stroke survivors.

During the inception dialogue, the Founder of BSF, Sir Dawa Tshering, presented a detailed concept and implementation framework to the FAO representatives, Ms. Dorji Om (Program Officer (Gender)) and Mr. Nauraj Rai (ProgramAssistant). The discussions, which had been ongoing informally, were formally consolidated today with a focus on budgeting, coordination and the way forward for implementation. The formal inception will take place soon.

In addition, BSF is also grateful to acknowledge the annual TLAG project support from Japan, kindly extended by Mr. Kojima. The project is expected to commence shortly and marks another important step in strengthening community-based rehabilitation services.

The Bhutan Stroke Foundation extends its sincere gratitude to the FAO team and TLAG partners for their continued trust, guidance and support. We also deeply appreciate Mr. Kojima for his generous and sustained contribution.

We look forward to continued collaboration and to welcoming our partners to Bhutan in the near future.

Meeting with Stroke Patients by the New Executive Director

From 16th to 20th March 2026, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Bhutan Stroke Foundation began his journey with a series of heartfelt and meaningful engagements with stroke patients, reflecting a deep commitment to care, compassion and service.

Soon after assuming office, the Executive Director took time to personally meet with stroke survivors, listening attentively to their experiences, challenges and hopes for the future. These sincere interactions created a space of trust and understanding, allowing patients to share their stories openly and honestly.

As part of this engagement, the Executive Director accompanied the patients to Changyul Park for a gentle physical walk. This thoughtful initiative not only encouraged movement and well-being but also provided an opportunity to better understand the everyday realities faced by the patients. Through warm one-on-one conversations, the Executive Director gained valuable insights that will guide future plans and initiatives.

During this period, the Executive Director also visited JDWNRH, where he met with doctors and stroke patients undergoing long-term treatment. The visit fostered meaningful discussions on patient care and rehabilitation. He further had the opportunity to meet with the Non-Clinical Director of the hospital to explore collaborative efforts aimed at strengthening support systems and enhancing patient welfare.

Through these engagements, it became evident that many stroke survivors continue to face significant physical, emotional and social challenges. Some shared the difficulties of daily living, while others expressed the need for stronger care and family support. These experiences serve as a gentle reminder that more compassionate and sustained efforts are needed to uplift their lives.

In response, the Bhutan Stroke Foundation has been making dedicated efforts to support stroke patients through both practical and holistic services. The Foundation assists patients in obtaining Stroke Patient Identification Cards, enabling them to travel on city buses free of cost—an initiative that has greatly improved their mobility, independence and access to essential services.

At the Foundation’s center in Motithang, stroke survivors who visit are provided with a supportive and healing environment. The center is equipped with facilities such as a treadmill and cycling machines to encourage physical exercise and rehabilitation. In addition, mindfulness training sessions and religious talks are regularly conducted to promote inner peace, emotional well-being, and spiritual comfort.

To further support patients during their visit, the center also provides lunch during the daytime, ensuring that their basic needs are cared for with dignity and compassion. These services are open to all stroke survivors, and the center warmly welcomes every patient seeking support—the doors remain open for all.

The Executive Director’s experience over these days has been both humbling and inspiring. It has strengthened his resolve to work closely with all stakeholders including the Ministry of Health to enhance care, expand support systems and improve the overall well-being of stroke survivors.

With compassion at its heart, the Bhutan Stroke Foundation remains committed to walking alongside every stroke survivor—bringing hope, care and a better quality of life for all.

Finally done at Nganglam and Panbang Drungkhag

Today marks the successful completion of the final leg of our Stroke Awareness and Stroke Risk Assessment campaign in Panbang and Nganglam Drungkhag. The concluding programs were conducted for the Royal Bhutan Police personnel in Nganglam Town and at the Rinchen Thang Check Post.

We are deeply grateful to Dasho Kezang and Dasho Namgay of Nganglam Police for their full cooperation and unwavering support. The Bhutan Stroke Foundation extends heartfelt appreciation to the Nganglam Police officials for their kindness, coordination, and commitment throughout our visit.

This two-week mission was implemented in alignment with our Annual Strategic Plan and with the strong guidance and support of our Board of Directors.

Over the course of these two weeks, we successfully:

Reached and sensitized approximately 6,000 - 7000 people with critical stroke awareness messages.
Conducted stroke risk screening for nearly 1,000 individuals.

We gratefully acknowledge the invaluable support received from Zhemgang Dzongkhag Administration and Pema Gatshel Dzongkhag Administration, along with the respective Drungkhag Administrations and Gewog leaders.

Our sincere appreciation also goes to the dedicated health professionals of Panbang Hospital, Nganglam Drungkhag Hospital, and the Health Assistants of various Gewogs for their technical guidance and collaboration.

Throughout the campaign, we engaged with people from all walks of life — visiting schools, hospitals, dratshangs, nunneries, gewogs, chiwogs, factories, BPC offices, Custom officials and the Royal Bhutan Police. Our outreach particularly focused on vulnerable communities in Nganglam and Panbang Drungkhag, where we delivered robust screening services and life-saving awareness.

The findings of our screenings revealed a concerning reality: a significant number of individuals are at high risk of stroke in the near future. This underscores the urgency of sustained preventive interventions, lifestyle modifications, and early medical management.

The Bhutan Stroke Foundation extends its deepest gratitude to all officials, institutions, and community members we engaged with. Without your generous support and collaboration, this mission would not have achieved such meaningful impact.

We cherish your partnership and look forward to receiving similar support as we continue our mission across other Dzongkhags in the future.
Together, we move forward — committed to prevention, awareness and saving lives.

Thank you one and all for your unwavering support, la!
