This month, we are sharing how cleanup campaigns can be done without creating more waste.

When we clean our surroundings, we should also avoid using single-use plastics like plastic water bottles, cups, plates, and snack wrappers.

A zero-waste cleanup means bringing our own water bottles, cups, plates, and containers, and separating the waste we collect properly.

Let’s clean our communities without creating new waste.

This Plastic Free July, let’s choose better for our rivers, wildlife, and future. Every single-use plastic we refuse is one less piece of waste in our environment.

This month, we are celebrating Plastic Free July to encourage everyone to make small changes that reduce plastic waste.

GIN was also part of the 2025 Plastic Free NextGen Fellowship, which connects young leaders working to reduce plastic pollution through awareness, storytelling, and community action.

Throughout July, GIN will share simple tips, activities, and messages to encourage people to reduce single-use plastics, carry reusable items, and make better everyday choices.

Let’s start small, act together, and build better habits for a cleaner Bhutan.

On 17 June 2026, Gross International Nature (GIN), with support from the Bhutan Ecological Society (BES), observed Global Garbage Man Day in Thimphu to recognize and appreciate the invaluable contribution of sanitation and waste management workers.

As part of the celebration, volunteers carried out a community cleanup campaign covering 7.8 km across 106 acres in the Babesa area. A total of 58 sacks of waste, weighing 1,083.73 kg, was collected during the cleanup and handed over to Thimphu Thromde for proper collection and management.

The initiative reminded us that keeping our surroundings clean is not the responsibility of waste workers alone, but a shared duty of every citizen.

As part of the low-waste effort, participants brought their own refillable water bottles, cups, and plates for water and refreshments, helping avoid single-use plastic bottles and disposable utensils during the event.

Participants also signed a formal request advocating for the official recognition of 17 June as Global Garbage Man Day in Bhutan, as an annual day to appreciate waste workers and encourage community-led action for cleaner cities.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants and volunteers for their time, energy, and commitment to this meaningful initiative. We also thank BES for supporting this event and Thimphu Thromde for their assistance in collecting and managing the waste gathered during the cleanup.

The NURTURE programme, organised by the Department of Employment and Entrepreneurship with technical support from Gross International Nature, was conducted over two days in Paro and one day in Thimphu, Bjemina, bringing together Bhutanese entrepreneurs for an introduction to Nature-Based Solutions, regenerative transformation, and green business opportunities.

The programme explored how Bhutan’s natural landscapes, traditional knowledge, local resources, and ecological values can be strengthened into meaningful business advantages. Participants were introduced to Nature-Based Solutions not only as environmental protection, but also as a practical market strategy for building climate-resilient and locally rooted enterprises.

Through sessions on Bhutan’s qualitative advantage, real examples of nature-based businesses, market opportunities, and green finance, the programme encouraged entrepreneurs to identify their unique assets, improve business readiness, and understand pathways to grants, loans, investments, and other forms of green support.

NURTURE aims to support entrepreneurs in building businesses that create economic value while protecting nature, strengthening communities, and contributing to Bhutan’s sustainable development.

🌿 Happy World Environment Day! 🌍

World Environment Day is a reminder that protecting our planet begins with the small choices we make every day.

This year, let’s celebrate by practicing the *5Rs*:

✅ *Refuse* things we do not need, especially single-use plastics
✅ *Reduce* unnecessary waste in our homes, offices, schools, and communities
✅ *Reuse* items whenever possible instead buying something new or throwing them away
✅ *Recycle* by segregating waste properly so recyclable materials can be collected and given a new life
✅ *Return* organic waste back to nature through composting

Everyone can celebrate World Environment Day in simple but meaningful ways — carry a reusable bag or bottle, avoid single-use plastics, segregate waste at source, plant something green, clean your surroundings, and encourage others to take action too.

A cleaner and greener future starts with us. Every small action matters. 💚
