Nyamdrel Zo'Sa: a cooperative makerspace

Nyamdrel Zo'Sa: a cooperative makerspace Nyamdrel Zo'Sa loosely translates to 'cooperative makerspace'. It is a community-based open platform

As we embark the path to richness in terms of capitalistic abundance and technological prowess, the need to engage in a critical dialogue of our personal preferences and collective aspiration should arise. Our outlook and conscience for everything that is happening around us and the buzz of breakthrough or the next big thing should facilitate a tendency to weigh what we hear and contemplate what we seek. Not "all that glitter is a gold"!

There is beauty in the small thing. And, such small thing and simple ideas should gain prominence in our life and societies. We are just about that :-). We don't deny wealth and technology, we are not just about that alone!

I would like to tease the coming of Nyamdrel Research & Innovation Center- a parent to Nyamdrel Zo'Sa: a cooperative makerspace.

At Nyamdrel Zo'Sa: a cooperative makerspace our vision is to build locally sustainable, globally connected, community-enabled creative hub that can foster the habit of collaborative making of frugal agriculture and social innovations.

The innovation that we make is not necessarily at par the sophistication of the market made one, but it should suffice the need of the user and be able to give autonomy to repair and maintain when its utility is depreciated. Such provision enables the sustainability of the tools created and provides enhanced utility as the option to repair and use is available.

This makes all the difference when it comes to self-sustaining and leading a circular economy approach!

Next!

Nyamdrel Zo'Sa: a cooperative makerspace aspires to catalyze the transition from exclusively using the market-based, imported farming tools to co-creation of these tools in the community alone.

Although the ground work like establishing the space, equipping it with basic fabrication machines and testing of small scale fabrication was undertaken, the strategies and plan of action to upscale and proliferate the initiative and its impact is in the process.

In a few months time, the Nyamdrel Zo'Sa: a cooperative makerspace will begin its innovation drives with renewed vision and line of actions. The primary objective is to empower the community to "make for themselves" the small scale agriculture tools and frugal innovations that solves their need. We don't necessarily encourage making of new tools but also emphasize on repairing of tools that can be repaired but otherwise discarded. This in a way forms a basic approach to building a circular economy at the grassroots.

A crucial component of your machine breaks. What would you do? In most case, you will search for new replacement. At times, when you run out of your luck, the component will be out of stock at the dealer's shop too. But, you know that at your community there is a Do It Yourself platform to hack it out. This is a story of how we hacked a brocken bolt for a rice mill at our community. If all the options are at odd, the best way is to "Do It Yourself"!

When you have the ability and potential to mend things, you can recreate tools like crowbar by using an old, damaged crowbar or round metal pole and a piece of flat metal bar. We here at Nyamdrel Zo'Sa do these stuff collaboratively.

The Cooking Tripod
At Nyamdrel Zo'Sa we try our hand at everything doable and useful. One such tool is the cooking tripod as it is a common household item that is used while cooking outdoor. While this is usually ordered through a blacksmith but due to the decline of this art, it is often imported now. We would like to disrupt the existing practice but also provide the freedom to design and develop based on their preferences.

It is a very first version of DIY digging rake. It's a common tool used by our farmers to dig their field, harvest tuber crops and conduct weeding. We are improvising this tool to make it user friendly and efficient. We aspire to substitute the import of this tool and provide our fellow farmers with an option to democratically design and fabricate this tool collaboratively.
