G17 University Ambassador Maisori Rai organized a seminar on "Empowering Lives: A Path to Zero Poverty," featuring Mr. Karma Kelvin as a virtual guest.

Attended by Social Service Unit members and interested students, the event was part of her G17 University project. Karma Kelvin shared his life and service initiative, emphasizing selfless community work and supporting international students as well.

"Engaging Men and Boys in Making Gender Equality a Reality by 2030" 🌈

The event was held at the College of Natural Resources with an objective of promoting awareness about gender equality and celebrating International Women's Day 2023. The event, led by Goal 5 Ambassador Dechen Wangchuk, aimed to create awareness, highlight the theme of the day, and address existing barriers to achieving gender parity.

The project attracted approximately 400 participants, including faculty members and students. One of the remarkable aspects of the event was the equal participation of both male and female attendees, emphasizing the importance of gender inclusivity. The collaboration with Y-PEER CNR, a youth-based organization, added further depth to the seminar on gender equality, fostering meaningful discussions about Sustainable Development Goal 5.

Ambassador Dechen Wangchuk, in his impactful speech, shed light on the pressing issues faced by women and extended the concept of gender equality to include LGBTQIA+ individuals. The theme, "DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality," emphasized the role of innovation and technology in advancing gender equality.

The project received positive feedback from the university and students, highlighting the importance of conducting similar gender-inclusive activities in the future. The PR and publicity efforts through the Y-PEER CNR and Y-PEER BHUTAN pages helped reach a wider audience and spread the message of gender equality.

The Messenger Bhutan- Hero of the Himalayas

Jamyang Jamtsho Wangchuk, an actor and an environmental advocate, is on a mission called "The Messenger-Ride for Action" to raise awareness about climate change and its impacts. Representing the voice of nearly 2 billion people from Himalayan communities, Jamyang aims to highlight the challenges they face due to climate change.

Motivated by his experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, Jamyang has actively advocated for climate action, reaching out to over 15 schools and colleges. He cycled through Bhutan, carrying a symbolic plastic bottle filled with melted ice from Thorthomi Lake, symbolizing the perils of plastic pollution and the urgency of addressing climate change.

The campaign focuses on three key messages: tree planting and conservation, transitioning to renewable energy, and integrating climate studies into school curricula. Jamyang's second leg of the journey started in May 2023, with a goal to reach Dubai for the COP28 climate summit, where he plans to present the symbolic bottle to the Bhutanese delegation, urging world leaders to take action.

Despite challenges such as filming permit restrictions, the denial of electric vehicle use in Nepal, and financial constraints, Jamyang remains hopeful with the support of organizations like ICIMOD, Bhutan Ecological Society, and government departments. The threat of glacial lake melting poses a severe risk to Bhutanese settlements, emphasizing the urgency of addressing climate change.

Jamyang's remarkable journey, documented in collaboration with filmmaker Ben Clark, serves as a powerful call to global leaders for immediate action. His commitment and hope for support from additional organizations demonstrate his dedication to combatting climate change and the need for collective efforts.

International Mother Earth Day
22 April

When Mother Earth sends us a message
Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods, have affected millions of people. Even these days, we are still trying to get back on track from COVID-19, a worldwide health pandemic linked to the health of our ecosystem.

Climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet.

This is the second Mother Earth Day celebrated within the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction. But we will only succeed if everyone plays a part.

For this International Mother Earth Day, let's remimd ourselves - more than ever - that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth. Join the global movement to restore our world!
