In 2007, a few prominent industrialists and entrepreneurs in the country got together to form an Association that would address the industrial issues in a manner that considers the broad industrial and environmental aspects related to the sector. While the Association started functioning imperceptibly in 2007, the โ€œAssociation of Bhutanese Industriesโ€ formally came into being in September 15, 2008 with a permanent office and staff headed by a General Secretary.

In what is a strategic initiative aimed at improving cross-border cargo movement and supporting the rapid industrialization of the Norbugang Industrial Park (NIP), the Budhini Immigration Facilitation Office in Samtse was opened earlier this week to strengthen its trade facilitation infrastructure. The facility is expected to streamline immigration clearance for industrial trucks transporting raw materials into Bhutan and finished products to export markets, reducing logistical bottlenecks that have long affected industries operating in the countryโ€™s largest emerging industrial hub.

Today, the Association of Bhutanese Industries (ABI) welcomed representatives from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for a productive discussion on potential collaboration to introduce and strengthen KAIZEN practices within Bhutanโ€™s industrial sector.

KAIZEN promotes continuous improvement through practical and incremental changes. Its application can help Bhutanese industries enhance productivity, improve product quality, minimize operational waste, strengthen workplace safety, and foster a culture of efficiency and innovation.

During the meeting, ABI highlighted the strong interest expressed by Bhutanese industries and emphasized the importance of developing a structured, industry-focused programme through a Training of Trainers approach. This would build national capacity by enabling trained Bhutanese professionals to deliver KAIZEN training and provide continued support to interested industries across the country.

The engagement represents an encouraging step towards exploring a sustainable capacity-building partnership that could strengthen the competitiveness, resilience and long-term growth of Bhutanโ€™s industrial sector.

ABI looks forward to continued consultation with JICA and relevant stakeholders to further explore and develop this important initiative.
