As you can see here the retreat house near Choechongtse Temple in the mountains or Paro needs a lot of work. The conditions have been very rudimentary even for the mountains of Bhutan. However since the 18th Century great yogis and practitioners have used this retreat house to deepen their practice and bring benefit to themselves and others.

Monmo Project wants to raise the funds to provide a much needed renovation and modernisation so that yogis and monks can continue to use the retreat house for years to come.

In celebration of Lhabab Duchen this year, please consider donating to our fundraiser 🙏🙏🙏

མོན་མོ། Monmo Project are raising funds to renovate and refurbish the retreat cabin at Choechongtse Temple in Paro Bhutan.

Choechongtse Temple is a small 400 year old temple in the mountains of Paro in Bhutan found on the trail to the Sacred Place of Bumdrak. It is overseen by Lama Tshering and hosts sincere dharma practitioners for special retreats, including the famous three year retreat.

Last year, through the kind and generous donations of our supporters, མོན་མོ། Monmo Project was able to fund the installation of electrical lighting for the first time (since it was built 400 years ago) to this remote but special temple. We also provided generators and rice cookers to support the retreatants of the temple.

This year we are hoping to raise 6000 US dollars to provide much needed renovation and refurbishment to a small retreat house near the temple. The retreat house was first built in the 18th century by Drukthop Jempa Gyeltshen and since then many Drukthop (Saint/Yogi) have lived there in deep retreat.

མོན་མོ། Monmo Project seeks to raise funds to ensure that yogis can continue to deepen their practice in this retreat house for many more decades to come by funding extensive and essential renovations to the retreat house.

Who is Monmo Tashi Khyidren?

Monmo Tashi Khyidren (མོན་མོ་བཀྲ་ཤིས་སྤྱི་འདྲེན། mon mo bkra shis spyi ‘dren), also known as Tashi Chidren, was an 8th century princess of Bumthang in Bhutan. She was born with the name Tashi Khyeudren, whose name was later changed to Tashi Chidren after she became the disciple of Yeshe Tsogyal, a great yogini. At the age of 13, Tashi Khyeudren met Yeshe Tsogyal who was meditating in a cave in Bhutan, and she was so deeply impressed by the yogini's wisdom and spiritual power that she became her lifelong disciple.

Under Yeshe Tsogyal's guidance, Tashi Khyidren developed a strong devotion to the dharma and eventually became one of the five great spiritual consorts of Padmasambhava, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. Padmasambhava took her as his consort to perfect the Vajrakilaya practices, which ensured the flourishing of the Buddhist teachings in Tibet.

Tashi Khyidren played a crucial role in spreading the teachings of Vajrayana in Bhutan and is famous for her spiritual accomplishments. According to legend, she transformed herself into a flying tigress that Guru Rinpoche rode upon in his manifestation as Dorje Drollo when he flew to the Tigers Nest, also known as Paro Taksang, where they practices the Vajrakilaya practices together.

Monmo Tashi Khyidren's life and wisdom have been an inspiration to many, and her legacy continues to be celebrated in Bhutan and beyond. She is revered as a great female master and a symbol of devotion, spiritual power, and the importance of women's role in the transmission of Buddhist teachings, and is the inspiration behind མོན་མོ། MonmoProject.
