Shout out to all of our fellow bird and animal lovers 🦅🐦‍⬛🦤

If you have a minute, could you please vote for our favorite bird man in Bhutan, Dr Sherub?

Known as Bird Sherub, he has spent decades researching, rescuing, protecting, and often rehabilitating birds that might otherwise have had little voice. It's never been about species or IUCN status - ALL birds matter, contribute to our ecosystems, and deserve care when needed.

Please share and support 🙏🏼

No birds were harmed for this photo. Each bird died naturally and was collected in support of research to better understand the underlying causes of death.

Environmental Photography Awards 2026: The Bird Man of Bhutan.

Voting is now open for the Public Award .photoaward in Monaco and can be cast here https://www.photocrowd.com/fpa2vote/

The image shows Bird Sherub (as he is affectionately known) at work, Head Researcher at the Ugyen Wanghuck Institute for Forest Research and Training in Bhutan.

As the foremost naturalist in Bhutan, he has spent more than three decades studying birds, and other animals. In this image - taken on assignment for WWF - he organizes hornbill skulls and skeletons as part of his dedicated efforts to research and protect these important animals.

Hornbills hold a significant place in Bhutanese culture, symbolizing strength and resilience, but they are increasingly at risk due to habitat loss, hunting, and other human pressures.

Through his research and conservation initiatives, Sherub plays a crucial role in raising awareness and fostering community-driven solutions to protect these majestic species. His work is a testament to the importance of preserving Bhutan’s rich biodiversity for generations to come.

Hello, new pony.

We’re so grateful for the people who reach out and ask for help when they see an animal in need - no matter what district they're in. Those calls and messages are often the only reason some of these animals get a chance.

At the same time, it’s hard not to notice how differently animals are treated depending on what people think their “use” is. The response to an injured dog versus a collapsed or dying horse can be completely unbalanced.

If an animal isn’t producing, carrying loads, on a leash, or catching mice, they are often treated as a nuisance rather than as a living being who deserves care.

It’s hard not to wonder where our values of compassion and coexistence are going, or have already gone.

The truth is simple: all of these sweet beings are sentient. They feel fear, pain, comfort, and kindness just the same.

UPDATE! She was found and is okay 🩷. Such a sweet girl 🥰

⚠️ Attention Paro Town People ⚠️
Has anyone seen this dog? She was hit by a vehicle around 1:00 PM today and we have not been able to locate her since.

The incident happened near the Forestry Office, across from the workshop area. We thought someone might have taken her to the DVH, but they didn't receive her.

Best case scenario she has managed to drag herself to a quiet and dark hiding spot. We searched the area but couldn't find her - so would greatly appreciate your help! She urgently needs medical attention.

Any information - please call us ASAP 17641224.

Thank you 🙏🏼 🐾 🙏🏼

A Most Heartfelt and Belated Thank You to Druk Ralung Shedrup Choling Monastery 🙏🌸❤️

On behalf of all the animals and people of Barnyard Bhutan and The Maya Foundation, we extend our sincere gratitude to Druk Ralung Shedrup Choling Monastery for their generous gift of 100,000 Nu. in support of the animals in our care, offered during the recent Losar celebration.

This extraordinary kindness will provide food and treatment to hundreds of rescued animals who depend on compassion to survive, and will also help us to continue responding to others in need - horses and mules, cattle, goats, pigs, cats, dogs, birds - and any other life in need of protection. 🐴🐄🐐🐖🐕🐈🐸🦉🦅

We are so inspired by their continued service to the community and by their extension of that compassion to the most vulnerable among us.

To be remembered in this way during such an auspicious occasion means more than words can say. We are deeply humbled and profoundly grateful. ❤️

Huge thanks to the incredible deaf students at Drugyel High School who helped save this sweet, sweet boy this evening ❤️

When he was down and struggling, they stepped in without hesitation — and because of that, he’s now safe and we have a chance to stabilize him.

We’re grateful not only for their compassion, but for the opportunity to learn a little sign language from them as well.

As always, we are looking for the owner — please share 🙏🏼

If he’s yours, call us! 17641224

After another two dead equines in the last few days from vehicle accidents, a friendly firm reminder to PLEASE stop and report the incident to the police and vet or rescue center. The animal being able to stand or walk away only means the limbs and spine are relatively intact. Internal injuries - which are much more serious - are often at play and prompt emergency treatment generally determines whether s/he lives or dies. We will maintain anonymity of anyone reporting such an incident; our hope is only to save the animal.

PLEASE SHARE — trying to find the horse’s owner

Another horse was, presumably, struck by a vehicle early this morning between Wangchang Gewog office and Nemeyzampa, Paro. He was travelling with two other animals, who had already left the area.

If you recognize him or know who he belongs to, please contact us on #17641224 as soon as possible.

While he is up, has had obvious trauma, possibly a fracture, to his shoulder. While we hope there are no internal injuries, it's too early to say.

If you ever hit an animal with a vehicle, PLEASE stop and report it. The injuries you don't see are often the most fatal, so the sooner s/he can be assessed and receive treatment if needed, the better their chance of survival and recovery.

Accidents do happen.
It’s how we respond to them that matters.

Thank you for the bucket, water and help 🙏🏼🐎🙏🏼
