BPAF is excited to welcome our newest team member, Jannelle Wilson, as our Monitoring and Evaluation Officer. Jannelle is a marine science professional and educator with experience in curriculum development, environmental stewardship, and scientific research support. A certified diver and avid traveler, she enjoys exploring diverse marine ecosystems, cultures, and environments.

Her goal as Monitoring and Evaluation Officer is to use her diverse background to support effective conservation efforts. She aims to use her adaptability, organizational skills, and ability to connect with people from different backgrounds to effectively track project progress, measure impact, and contribute to the long-term protection of The Bahamas' natural resources.

BPAF was a proud sponsor of Bahamas Climate Week 2026 at Baha Mar under the theme "At the Edge of the Water". This event combined expert presentations, coastal conservation activities, and public engagement on climate issues affecting The Bahamas.

The week began with an exhibition at ECCHO featuring 24 artists exploring the relationship between island communities and our waters.

Alexio Brown, BPAF's Marine Conservation Program Manager, served as one of the hosts for the opening presentations and discussions. He also highlighted BPAF's marine conservation work, including the Bahamas Project for Marine Conservation.

During that week, BPAF also joined the Baha Mar Resort Foundation and other partners in a revegetation initiative marking International Coastal Cleanup Day. Through a collective effort, 500 trees were planted to help reduce erosion.

Experts presented on disaster preparedness, construction, marine ecosystems and climate finance. School visits, community discussions and poetry events provided additional opportunities for public participation throughout the week.

Through sponsorship, facilitation, and participation in coastal planting, BPAF supported both climate education and practical conservation during the event.

BPAF has reached a historic milestone as the first, and currently only, Bahamian organization endorsed to support the delivery of Green Climate Fund Readiness projects.

Following a rigorous assessment of its financial management systems, BPAF is now eligible to receive, manage, implement and report on GCF Readiness grants. This milestone creates a stronger pathway for accessing climate-finance resources and supporting locally led climate action throughout The Bahamas.

The Bahamas Protected Areas Fund recently met with Prime Minister the Hon. Philip Davis for a productive discussion where the team shared updates on the financial management of the Bahamas Project for Marine Conservation, advised on BPAF's endorsement by the Green Climate Fund and discussed ongoing capacity-building efforts.

Joining the Prime Minister were Creswell Sturrup, Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, and Senator the Hon. Clint Watson, Parliamentary Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister. BPAF was represented by Marcus Cheetham, Board Chair, Larry Glinton, Board Member, Karen Panton, Executive Director and Alexio Brown, Marine Conservation Program Manager.

The Bahamas Protected Areas Fund is pleased to announce the appointment of Marcus J. S. Cheetham as Chair of the Board, effective July 1, 2026.

Marcus brings more than 30 years of experience in technology operations and leadership and is the Founder and President of Southworth Consultants. He joined BPAF's Board in March 2023 as Treasurer and has since played an important role in strengthening the Fund's governance, corporate engagement strategy and digital presence.

Marcus also helped lead the negotiation and ex*****on of the Bahamas Project for Marine Conservation, an initiative that established a long-term financing mechanism for marine conservation in The Bahamas, with the Government of The Bahamas and The Nature Conservancy.

We look forward to his leadership as BPAF continues advancing sustainable conservation and protecting the country's natural resources.

We had an excellent and productive two days in New Providence at our Grant Writing, Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Workshop that brought together local organizations and conservation practitioners for meaningful learning and collaboration.

Participants explored key areas of grant writing, project development, budgeting, monitoring and evaluation as they prepare for the Marine Conservation Programme's 3rd Call for Project Concepts. The sessions were filled with thoughtful discussions and practical guidance to help participants turn their conservation ideas into strong, fundable projects.

We're grateful to everyone who contributed to the workshop's success and to the Bahamas Project for Marine Conservation (BPMC) for funding this important initiative.
