The Coalition of Independents is raising serious concerns about the Davis administration’s response to the reported DEA operations in The Bahamas.
First of all, let us establish something: the Government belongs to the Bahamian people. It is not the private property of Philip Davis, his Cabinet, the PLP or any political party.
Prime Minister Davis, you are correct about one thing, the Bahamian people are not afraid of the DEA, bearing in mind that the people are the government. In fact, many Bahamians are relieved that, for the first time, the pieces appear to be coming together. We are beginning to understand how alleged drug traffickers could operate and thrive so boldly in this country, and why they may have felt protected.
You are demanding that the international community respect our laws. But where was that same respect when it came to our Constitution, our Parliament, our national flag and the rule of law? Your administration now faces serious allegations concerning the protection of people accused of drug trafficking, yet you want to shift the conversation toward sovereignty and fear. Remember, the buck stops with you which is equivalent to accountability as leader.
When a country’s leadership shows little respect for its own institutions, what should we expect from everyone else?
Do not drag the Bahamian people into this political mess. We are not afraid of lawful investigations. The Bahamian people are disgusted of the corruption, political protection, compromised institutions and leaders who may believe they are above accountability.
Mr. Davis, the Bahamian people do not fear the DEA. We want the truth. We want an independent investigation. We want to know who was involved, who knew what, who benefited and whether anyone in public office attempted to obstruct or interfere with these investigations.
This is not about protecting the DEA. It is about protecting The Bahamas from corruption and ensuring that no politician, official or alleged drug trafficker is above the law.
Do not speak for us as though we are afraid.
