United Caribbean Trans Persons Network (UCTRANS) joins the call for justice, accountability, and a full investigation into the killing of Kwasi Dion Gill in Trinidad and Tobago.
A human life has been lost. A family is grieving. A community is demanding answers.
We call on the Government of Trinidad and Tobago and the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to ensure that this case receives a prompt, thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation and that anyone responsible is held accountable through due process.
But our call does not stop with one investigation.
The death of Kwasi Dion Gill must compel Caribbean governments to confront a broader reality: violence, discrimination, and hate against marginalized people cannot be treated as ordinary or inevitable.
TO THE GOVERNMENT OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO:
We call for:
A transparent investigation into Kwasi Dion Gill’s death.
Accountability for those responsible.
Stronger protections for people who face violence because of their identity or perceived identity.
Meaningful engagement with LGBTIQA+ organizations and human rights defenders.
TO CARIBBEAN GOVERNMENTS:
The Caribbean must move beyond statements of concern and take legislative action.
We call on governments across the region to adopt comprehensive hate-crime legislation that recognizes violence motivated by s*xual orientation, gender identity and expression, s*x characteristics, and other forms of prejudice.
We call for the full recognition of LGBTIQA+ people as citizens of our Caribbean nations — citizens whose lives, families, dignity, and safety deserve protection under the law.
Our communities should not have to wait for another murder before governments act.
LGBTIQA+ people are Caribbean people.
We are doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, parents, students, activists, faith leaders, artists, public servants, workers, neighbors and citizens.
We belong here.
Our governments have a responsibility to protect us.
UCTRANS stands with Kwasi Dion Gill’s family, friends, and community and with all Caribbean communities demanding justice.
Kwasi deserves justice.
His family deserves answers.
Caribbean LGBTIQA+ people deserve protection.
This is bigger than one case.
This is a call for the Caribbean to recognize that every life has equal value and every citizen deserves equal protection.
