Waterkeepers Bahamas

Waterkeepers Bahamas Waterkeepers Bahamas are your Coastalkeepers in Bimini, Grand Bahama and Clifton-Western New Providence

Waterkeepers Bahamas works to ensure the waters of the Clifton and Western Bays are safe for swimming and fishing for future generations. We are a proud member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, the world’s fastest growing environmental movement that has united more than 220 Waterkeeper organizations around the world, all working together to focus citizen action on issues that affect our waterways, from

pollution to climate change. If you are aware of pollution, unregulated development or other illegal activities taking place in the area please contact our Waterkeeper, Sam Duncombe, immediately: 242-445-7807, [email protected] or send a message via our contact page. If possible, and safe, please take pictures to document and share. Currently Clifton-Western Bays Waterkeeper is working to:

Stop Oil Pollution in Clifton Bay

With the presence of a major power plant in the area, oil spills and waste oil leaching have been a regular occurrence. Such spills and the hot water outlets put tremendous pressure on the surrounding marine environment and local beaches. You can see the effects from oil washing up on Adelilade Beach on Sept. 11, 2014. Clifton-Western Bays Waterkeepers were alerted to the spill by affected citizens. Support the Creation of the West New Providence Marine Managed Area

The Bahamas does not currently have a marine managed area in its national park system to protect the vital coral reef ecosystems around New Providence Island, including those in Clifton Bay. Save The Bays supports the Bahamas National Trust’s (BNT) proposal for the establishment of the West New Providence Marine Managed Area to protect the western portion of New Providence Island. Such a protected area would contribute significantly to our mission of preserving Clifton Bay and other common marine environments; particularly the area’s coral reefs where the risk of human impacts are the greatest. As a world famous scuba diving mecca, the marine environment of New Providence Island draws thousands of tourists each year. It also serves as a key transshipment point for the country and is heavily used by recreational and sport fishermen. Increasing usage makes the establishment of a marine managed area essential to regulate and sustain the area’s sensitive natural resources. BNT is recommending a multi-zoned management approach that would allow for continued sustainable fishing, tourism, transport and development activities while preventing further degradation of coral reefs and allowing for the replenishment of depleted marine resources.

Rain or shine, the mission continues!

Today our incredible team and volunteers came together, despite the rainy weather, to prep every single mangrove plant that will be outplanted this Saturday.

There’s something special about seeing people come together for the environment, knowing that every seedling planted helps protect our coastlines and strengthen our communities for generations to come.

Now we need YOU!

📣 Tell a friend to tell a friend that this Saturday is our final planting for the season, and EVERYTHING MUST GO! We’re aiming to get every last plant into the ground, but we can’t do it without the support of our community.

Grab your family, bring a friend, and come help us make a lasting impact.

It’s always a joy to travel to the Gateway of The Bahamas, Bimini, and spend time monitoring its amazing beaches.

From crystal-clear waters to pristine shorelines, Bimini continues to remind us why protecting our coastal environments is so important. Every visit provides valuable insights into the health of our beaches and the ecosystems that depend on them.

Thankful for the opportunity to do this work and help ensure these natural treasures remain for future generations to enjoy. 💙🌎
