A champion of womenโ€™s rights and equality, a true โ€œsheroโ€ has been lost. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburgโ€™s influence on American politics and modern culture inspired women in the United States and throughout the world.
RIP RBG.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, died today of pancreatic cancer at the age of 87. One of the Court's main advocates for advancing women's rights under the law, Ginsburg was famous for breaking gender barriers and delivering searing dissents. Appointed to the Court in 1993, she served more than 27 years, at times as the lone woman on the Court. From the time she entered Harvard Law School in 1956 as one of nine women in a class of 500, Ginsburg was a pioneering advocate for women's rights. As she once observed in an interview: "I was a law school teacher, and that's how I regard my role here with my colleagues [on the Court], who haven't had the experience of growing up female and don't fully appreciate the arbitrary barriers that have been put in women's way."

To read more about Justice Ginsburg's extraordinary life and impact -- and discover books and films to share her powerful story with children and teen -- visit our blog post, "A Mighty Justice," at https://www.amightygirl.com/blog?p=18772

To introduce kids to the trailblazing Justice Ginsburg, we highly recommend the board book "I Look Up To... Ruth Bader Ginsburg" for ages 2 to 4 (https://www.amightygirl.com/i-look-up-to-ruth-bader-ginsburg), the picture books for ages 5 to 9 "I Dissent: Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes Her Mark" (https://www.amightygirl.com/i-dissent) and "No Truth Without Ruth" (https://www.amightygirl.com/no-truth-without-ruth), the early chapter book "You Should Meet: Ruth Bader Ginsburg" for ages 6 to 8 (https://www.amightygirl.com/you-should-meet-rbg), and the in-depth picture book biography "Ruth Objects: The Life of Ruth Bader Ginsburg" for ages 6 to 9 (https://www.amightygirl.com/ruth-objects)

For older kids, we recommend the illustrated biography "Who Is Ruth Bader Ginsburg?" for ages 8 to 12 (https://www.amightygirl.com/who-is-ruth-bader-ginsburg), the new graphic novel for ages 9 and up "Becoming RBG" (https://www.amightygirl.com/becoming-rbg), and "Dissenter on the Bench: Ruth Bader Ginsburgโ€™s Life and Work" for ages 13 and up (https://www.amightygirl.com/dissenter-on-the-bench)

For adults inspired by Justice Ginsburg, we recommend the excellent biography "Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg" (https://www.amightygirl.com/notorious-rbg), her memoir "My Own Words" (https://www.amightygirl.com/my-own-words-rbg), and the photo-filled biography "The Unstoppable Ruth Bader Ginsburg" (https://www.amightygirl.com/the-unstoppable-ruth-bader-ginsburg)

To commemorate 100 years since the passing of the 19th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which granted women the right to vote, the original torch of the Statue of Liberty will be lit in the colors of the National Womenโ€™s Party flag: purple, white and gold. According to members of the National Woman's Party, the color gold was described as โ€œthe color of light and life, is as the torch that guides our purpose, pure and unswerving.โ€ Purple represented โ€œthe color of loyalty, constancy to purpose, unswerving steadfastness to a cause.โ€

The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World carries her light forward much like the light that carried forward the suffrage movement of the 1800's and early 1900's. On this monumental occasion, other National Park sites will also share in the initiative by lighting structures purple and gold.

Yes.
Worth watching all ten minutes.
On the House Floor in the United States, Representative AOC eloquently rejects Representative Yohoโ€™s empty apology after he hurled expletives at her in front of witnesses on the steps of the nationโ€™s capital.
So very well put, as she thanks him for showing the world that you can be a powerful man, married, with daughters, and still accost women without remorse and with a sense of impunity. As we know, this issue isnโ€™t exclusive to the United States.

โ€œTreating people with dignity and respect makes a decent man.โ€ -Rep. AOC

Wow. Walz.

Wow. Walz.

Born Margareeta Johanna Konttra Niiranen in Tornio, Finland, in 1861, Maggie Walz came to the United States at the age of twenty. Walz was a homesteader, a suffragist, and so much more. She filed a claim under the Homestead Act for 160 acres of land on Drummond Island, located in Michigan.

Shortly after arriving, Walz worked as a correspondent for Finnish language papers, and served as an interpreter. She was also an active leader in the Womenโ€™s Rights movement, and founded the Calumet Suomen Nais-Yhdistys (Calumet Finnish Womanโ€™s Society), dedicated to the advancement of women. Walz was responsible for the publication of the societyโ€™s newspaper, the Naisten Lehti (Womenโ€™s Paper), which was distributed nationally.

In 1887, Walz returned to Europe, to bring back 14 Finnish women, for whom she obtained work. By 1905, she had come to be referred to as โ€œLeader of Her People in the West.โ€ She became a federal land agent, and then established a Finnish homesteader colony on the island. Maggieโ€™s Drummond Island colony was a stunning success. The Detroit Free Press reported that as of November 1911, there were โ€œfive settlements, with a combined population of probably a thousand.โ€ The main settlement on the island was Kreetan, the Finnish word for Maggie โ€“ named after Walz.
