Every Bahamian is empowered to reach his or her full potential. and The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation are philanthropic organisations that share the same purpose and have deep roots in the Lyford Cay community. Our core belief is that increasing educational attainment across the country is key to the development of a prosperous, healthy and peaceful Bahamas. To that end, we focus our efforts on providing learning opportunities for Bahamian children, young adults, families, and communities. Our programmes are designed to help those who need them the most, and to yield palpable, long-term results. We especially serve students who would be the first generation in their family to achieve a post-secondary education. We are disciplined in what we fund, how we deliver our programmes, how we measure results, and how we adapt to changing times. We are committed to acting with integrity and transparency, and to being excellent stewards of our donors, their gifts, and all whom we serve. We rely entirely on the generosity of our donors — like-minded individuals, corporations and private grant-making organisations — to carry out our work of transforming lives through education.

This International Day of the Girl, Lyford Cay Foundations celebrates the potential, resilience, and limitless possibilities of girls across The Bahamas!

Through our FOCUS programme, we are committed to creating opportunities for young girls to discover their strengths, build confidence, develop leadership skills, and dream boldly about their futures.

We believe that when girls are empowered through education, mentorship, and meaningful opportunities, they gain the tools to become leaders, changemakers, and trailblazers in their communities and beyond.

Today, we celebrate the bright minds, bold ambitions, and incredible potential of the girls in our FOCUS programme and across our nation. Their voices matter, their dreams are valid, and their futures are full of promise! 🌟

Lyford Cay Foundations is pleased to announce the opening of our Fall Grants Cycle, supporting after-school programmes that create meaningful opportunities for underserved communities across The Bahamas.

Registered non-profit organizations delivering programmes in Arts & Culture, Civic/Economic/Community Development, Education, Enrichment, Science/STEM, and Sports are invited to apply for grants of up to $5,000.

Grant funding may support programme needs including, but not limited to, meals for participants, equipment and supplies, training, operating costs, technical assistance, etc.

Important eligibility and funding requirements:
• Applicants must be registered non-profit organizations and have an up-to-date Certificate of Renewal confirming their non-profit status at the time of application.
• If an organization's Certificate of Renewal is due to expire at any point during the grant cycle, an updated certificate must be provided. For successful applicants, grant funds will be withheld until a valid, current Certificate of Renewal is received.
• For successful applicants, grant funds can only be deposited into a bank account held in the name of the organization receiving the grant. Funds will not be deposited into an individual/personal bank account.

Behind every student who discovers their confidence, embraces a challenge, or begins to see new possibilities for their future is an educator who helped nurture that growth.

Today, on World Teachers’ Day, we recognize the lasting impact teachers make in the lives of their students each day.

After 23 years in education, Anicha Gibson, E.P. Roberts Primary School educator and LEAP Programme teacher, still describes teaching as a calling—one rooted in inspiring, empowering, and making a lasting difference in the lives of children.

“Teaching is more than a profession; it is a calling to inspire, empower, and make a lasting difference in the lives of children. After 23 years in education, my passion for teaching continues to grow.”

For the past three years, Anicha has brought that passion to LEAP, where she values the opportunity to provide students with individualized support to strengthen their literacy and numeracy skills and accelerate their learning. She has seen firsthand how consistent support and encouragement can transform a student’s educational journey.

Beyond academic progress, she has watched students grow in confidence, communication, and social skills—and, most importantly, begin to believe in their own ability to succeed. 💙

This World Teachers’ Day, we celebrate Anicha and all of the dedicated educators across our programmes who meet students where they are, help them discover what they are capable of, and ensure that every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

🍎 October 5th marks World Teachers’ Day and today we continue to highlight some of the dedicated educators who drive the success of our programmes.

For the past six years, FOCUS Programme teacher Albranique Rolle has supported the development of her students not only academically, but also mentally and emotionally.

“One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is celebrating their progress, building their confidence, and helping them develop a love for learning.”

As a teacher with both FOCUS and Palmdale Primary School, Albranique encourages her students to believe in themselves, pursue their goals, and recognize that college—and the dreams they have for their futures—are within reach.

For Albranique, being part of that journey and witnessing her students’ growth along the way is something she is grateful to experience. 💙

🍎Great teachers do more than impart knowledge—they build relationships, inspire curiosity and create opportunities for young people to discover what they are capable of becoming.

As we continue our celebration leading up to World Teachers’ Day on October 5, we’re proud to spotlight Sidney Sawyer, Family Island Leadership Programme (FILP) Team Lead and current teacher at Government High School.

For Sidney, teaching brings together two of his greatest passions: a love of learning and a love for young people.

“Teaching is more than a career. It is an opportunity to learn, to build relationships, to light flames, and to help shape lives. And I consider that a privilege.”

At the heart of Sidney’s approach is the belief that meaningful learning begins with connection. When young people feel seen, valued and supported, they are empowered to grow—not only academically, but also in confidence, character and leadership.

For the past three years, Sidney has brought that passion to FILP, finding great joy in mentoring and watching his students discover their strengths, develop their leadership skills and gain a deeper understanding of their potential.

🍎 As we count down to World Teachers’ Day, we’re celebrating some of the dedicated educators across Lyford Cay Foundations’ programmes who create spaces for students to learn, grow, and discover their potential.

For Clevanche Lightbourne, educator at S.C. McPherson and FOCUS teacher, teaching goes beyond the traditional classroom. Through creativity, flexibility, meaningful connection, and project-based learning, she works to create an environment where every student feels valued, confident, and comfortable being themselves.

“One of the things I value most about my teaching experience with the FOCUS Programme is the opportunity to teach beyond the traditional classroom and discover new ways to connect with my students.”

For Clevanche, some of the most rewarding moments come when students who were once hesitant begin taking risks, sharing their ideas, and recognizing that their voices matter.

As she reminds us, teaching isn’t only about what students learn—it’s also about helping them discover the confidence, courage, and ability they already possess. 💙

Great teachers help students see what’s possible—not only in the classroom, but within themselves. As World Teachers’ Day approaches on October 5th, we continue celebrating some of the dedicated educators who bring this belief to life across our programmes.

For Tamu McKinney, Lyford Cay International School educator and LEAP Teacher, education is about creating equity.

“Being part of LEAP has been a truly rewarding experience because it reflects what I believe education should be: creating opportunities, closing gaps and helping every child recognise their potential.”

Working with young learners through LEAP has strengthened Tamu’s passion for education and reinforced an important lesson: a student’s progress cannot always be measured by grades alone.

For Tamu, seeing a student become more confident, independent, and willing to engage is among the greatest rewards of teaching. đź’™

🌊 Today, on World Maritime Day, we’re highlighting LCF Alumni Scholar Cidney Thompson, whose work is helping to advance The Bahamas’ interests across our oceans and on the international stage.

Cidney currently serves as a Foreign Service Officer in the Maritime and Ocean Affairs Bureau at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she works at the intersection of diplomacy, maritime policy, environmental conservation, and sustainable development.

Her journey to this role was supported by the Solmssen Templeton Scholarship, which she received in 2023 to pursue a Master’s Degree in International Maritime Law.

Reflecting on the impact of that opportunity, Cidney shares:
“In 2023, I received the Solmssen Templeton Scholarship to pursue my Master's Degree in international Maritime Law. To date, I proudly represent The Bahamas in the Maritime and Ocean Affairs Bureau of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where I liaise with government and international agencies and participate in treaty negotiations and dialogues around the world. I am eternally grateful to the Lyford Cay Foundation for supporting my education, which has enabled me to serve in this capacity and directly promote the conservation and protection of our marine environment, as well as the sustainable development of our maritime industry.”

For an archipelagic nation like The Bahamas, our waters are central to our environment, economy, culture, and future. Cidney’s journey demonstrates the impact of investing in Bahamians who are prepared to represent our country and help shape the policies that protect these vital resources.

This World Maritime Day, we’re proud to celebrate Cidney and the LCF Alumni Scholars using their education and expertise to serve The Bahamas at home and around the world. 🌊

🌎 In honor of the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, we’re highlighting LCF Alumni Scholar Amber Turner and her continued commitment to climate action and environmental stewardship.

Amber currently serves as a 2026 Italy Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) Fellow for The Bahamas, contributing to work that is especially important for Small Island Developing States like ours, where environmental protection and strong climate policy are critical to building a more resilient future.

Reflecting on the role Lyford Cay Foundations has played in her journey, Amber shares:“Receiving a Lyford Cay Foundations scholarship was a pivotal moment in my academic and professional development. It was through the Foundation's support that I was able to pursue my graduate studies, and the exposure I gained during that time has continued to open doors, directly shaping the opportunities I am fortunate to pursue today. Their investment strengthened my commitment to advancing climate policies and environmental stewardship in The Bahamas and remains foundational to the work I do now.”

Amber’s journey is a powerful example of how investing in Bahamian talent can help strengthen the expertise and leadership needed to address some of our country’s most pressing environmental challenges.
