VISION
Every Bahamian is empowered to reach his or her full potential. and The Canadian Lyford Cay Foundation are philanthropic organisations that share the same purpose and have deep roots in the Lyford Cay community. Our core belief is that increasing educational attainment across the country is key to the development of a prosperous, healthy and peaceful Bahamas. To that end, we focus our effor

ts on providing learning opportunities for Bahamian children, young adults, families, and communities. Our programmes are designed to help those who need them the most, and to yield palpable, long-term results. We especially serve students who would be the first generation in their family to achieve a post-secondary education. We are disciplined in what we fund, how we deliver our programmes, how we measure results, and how we adapt to changing times. We are committed to acting with integrity and transparency, and to being excellent stewards of our donors, their gifts, and all whom we serve. We rely entirely on the generosity of our donors — like-minded individuals, corporations and private grant-making organisations — to carry out our work of transforming lives through education.

🌊 This World Lake Day, we’re celebrating the ripple effect of opportunity, leadership, and giving back.

In 2006, Kyle Chea attended Vassar College after receiving the All Bahamas Merit Scholarship, which at the time was jointly supported by Lyford Cay Foundations, the Government of The Bahamas, and the Central Bank of The Bahamas. While at Vassar, an unexpected passion for rowing would ultimately inspire him to transform Lake Cunningham into a place for sport, education, and community.

After walking onto Vassar’s rowing team with no prior experience and eventually becoming team captain, Kyle returned home with a vision. In 2012, he founded the Nassau Rowing Club, creating a pathway for young Bahamians to pursue educational opportunities through rowing scholarships at Division I and II universities in the United States.

Today, what began with just six individuals has grown into a thriving rowing community. The annual Lake Cunningham Classic now welcomes more than 90 competitors, ages 11 to 65+, while the Club has introduced 4,500+ students across seven government schools to indoor rowing this academic year alone.

Reflecting on the journey, Kyle shares: “The Nassau Rowing Club would not exist without the Lyford Cay Foundations. I received the All Bahamas Merit Scholarship in 2006 to attend Vassar College, and this support allowed me to fully explore everything a liberal arts education has to offer. Most importantly, I never imagined I would be an athlete, let alone team captain after walking onto the Vassar Rowing team with no prior experience. After returning to Nassau after graduation, I noticed Lake Cunningham would be the perfect venue to bring a sport I love to the country I love. Rowing has given me so much, and I am excited to see the impact it is making as my team and I give back to our home community.”

Today, Kyle serves as Director, Platform Operations & Investor Relations at Riverstone Earth in New York City, while continuing to make an impact at home through the Nassau Rowing Club.

This World Lake Day, we celebrate Kyle’s story and the role Lake Cunningham has played in creating opportunities for Bahamians to learn, compete, grow, and dream bigger. 💙

🌟 In honor of International Youth Day, we’re celebrating the creativity, ideas, and potential of young Bahamians.

This summer, FOCUS students brought those qualities to life during the FOCUS Showcase, the culminating event of this year’s Summer SLAM Programme.

Under the theme “Island Entrepreneurs,” students were challenged to think like entrepreneurs by developing their own Bahamian-inspired products. From identifying an idea to developing their concepts and ultimately presenting their finished products, students had the opportunity to put their creativity, problem-solving skills, and knowledge into action.

The Showcase is one example of how Project-Based Learning (PBL) is incorporated throughout the FOCUS curriculum. Rather than learning concepts only in the classroom, students are encouraged to explore real-world questions, collaborate with their peers, solve problems, create, and share what they have learned with others.

International Youth Day reminds us of the importance of creating spaces where young people are not only encouraged to learn, but are also trusted to imagine, create, lead, and contribute.

Through programmes like FOCUS, we are helping young Bahamians recognize that their ideas have value—and giving them opportunities to develop the skills and confidence to bring those ideas to life. 💙

🎉 Congratulations to the Family Island Leadership Programme Class of 2026 for completing an intense week full of college readiness, career exploration, and leadership development! We were especially excited to welcome students from R.N. Gomez Comprehensive School in the Berry Islands for the very first time, further expanding FILP's reach across our archipelago.

In July, students explored university and career pathways through visits to UB, BTVI, Atlantis, Royal Caribbean, Doctor’s Hospital, and more. They met leaders from the Ministry of Education, connected with professionals across a range of industries, strengthened their communication and leadership skills, and gained valuable insights into college readiness, scholarships, personal finance, and public speaking.

To our students: this experience was created with you in mind, and we can't wait to see where your journey takes you beyond the Family Island Leadership Programme. 💙

Last Thursday, FOCUS Summer SLAM 2026 welcomed the parents and guardians of our students to the University of The Bahamas for our annual Parent Breakfast. The morning provided a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time with their children while connecting with the teachers, interns, coaches, and support staff who help make the programme possible.

Thank you to all of the parents and guardians who joined us. We appreciate your continued partnership and look forward to welcoming even more families at our upcoming Open House and Student Showcase. The success of FOCUS is built on the strong collaboration between our programme and the families who encourage and support our students every step of the way.

Reflecting on the importance of family engagement, Senior Programme Coordinator Ms. Dwaneisha McGregor shared:

"The success of every FOCUS student is strengthened by the encouragement they receive both at home and within our programme. When parents and guardians stay connected to their child's learning journey, students feel supported, motivated, and empowered to reach their full potential. We are grateful for the trust families place in us and believe that the strongest outcomes are achieved when educators and families work together with a shared commitment to student growth."

Congratulations to our 2026 Peter George Goulandris Heritage Scholarship recipients: Thomas Rolle, Lashawn Polhemus, Wesley Legisse, and Oakland Duncan! 🎉

Today, these four scholars will depart Nassau to begin an incredible five-month course in Heritage Building Crafts through the King's Foundation. Throughout the programme, they will develop skills in masonry and bricklaying, roofing and timber, decorative arts, and business, while studying and training across Scotland, Wales, and England.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to learn from master craftspeople, gain internationally recognized experience, and help preserve traditional building skills for future generations.

Please join us in wishing Thomas, Lashawn, Wesley, and Oakland safe travels and a rewarding, unforgettable learning experience. We can't wait to see all they accomplish!

🎉 FOCUS Summer SLAM has officially begun! ☀️

This year, students will be stepping into the world of entrepreneurship as the theme for this summer is “Island Entrepreneurs”.

By the end of Summer SLAM, each student team will have conceptualized a Bahamian-themed product and developed a product sample, turning their ideas into reality through hands-on learning and collaboration.

We can't wait to see the incredible products, creative thinking, and entrepreneurial spirit that our FOCUS students bring to life this summer. Here's to a season of learning, innovation, and fun.

Cheers to a fantastic summer ahead!
