HISTORY
Indian community in São Paulo have been getting together without a formal banner since mid 1980’s to commemorate Indian festivals, especia
lly Diwali. In 1992, with donation of some of the members of the community, 15000 square meters of land was acquired in the neighboring municipality of Itapecerica da Serra, which was named “Shanti Niketan”. From then on the social and cultural activities of the Indian community were centered on IASP. With the decline of the Indian population in Sao Paulo, IASP remained in a dormant state for approximately five years from 2000 to 2005. Motivated by the explosion in the commercial exchange between India and Brazil and the arrival of new Indians to Sao Paulo, the Association was revived in 2006 and since then has been quite active promoting social gathering of the members of the Indian community through picnics, cultural events, sports, commemoration of Indian festivals and above all Diwali which has always been highlight among the activities of IASP. PROFILE
The objective of the Indian Association to promote social exchange among the members of the Indian community, divulge Indian culture to the Brazilian population in the city of Sao Paulo, and to Implement Social Actions through philanthropic activities. In some years IASP activities reached a level of an event every month with the celebration of Diwali in October-November in Grand scale. Indian menu at the Diwali dinner always attracted a large Brazilian crowd. In the earlier years, the women from the community prepared the food and the celebration was held in one of the schools. But the change of the profile of the Indian community led to changes in the style of the events. In recent years, Diwali Nights were celebrated in Five Star Hotels still drawing a full house. After a careful analysis IASP has selected ABCD Nossa Casa that offers shelter and professional and cultural education to approximately 120 orphans, abandoned and needy children with the objective of achieving their social inclusion when they become adult. IASP supported ABCD in the implementation of Web design course for these children during a period of three years and now the course si supported by the state and corporate entities. IASP also has in its agenda, promotion of an Intellectual Forum addressing various themes related with Indian heritage and culture. Now, with the establishment of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre (SVCC) in São Paulo, such activities may be conducted jointly with SVCC. FINANCES
