In Mozambique, much of philanthropy lives in everyday acts of solidarity, yet it rarely shows up in official data.

When is discussed, the focus often falls on formal institutions, large foundations, or external funding. But in , it is also shaped by practices like xitique (community-based savings and lending system), faith-based giving, women’s groups, and other forms of mutual support that continue to hold people together.

Our new report, ‘Exploratory Mapping of the Philanthropy Support Ecosystem in Mozambique’, explores these realities in more depth, and we have also prepared a short summary for those looking for the key takeaways in a more accessible format.

The Arab region is often framed in global climate conversations as a site of vulnerability. This research challenges that narrative and fills a critical gap.

In partnership with WINGS, the Arab Foundations Forum has released the MENA Climate Philanthropy Ecosystem Pre-Mapping Report, a first attempt to map who is funding in the region, how, and where the gaps lie.

What emerges is a more complex picture:
• in the region is not new; it has long been embedded in food systems, water, energy, and community resilience.
• is growing, but remains fragmented and unevenly distributed.
• Funding is often short-term and not aligned with grassroots realities.
• Critical areas like adaptation and the climate–migration–conflict nexus remain underfunded.
• Limited data and coordination continue to constrain impact.

The opportunity is clear: philanthropy in the region can play a stronger role by backing locally rooted solutions, enabling collaboration, and shifting towards long-term, trust-based funding.

More foundations are starting to embed climate into how they work, and the data shows it.

The latest International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change Progress Report, released today with Philea draws on data from signatories and shows growing momentum across the field:
• 61% of signatories have increased climate spending
• Foundations with an action plan are 3x more likely to make progress
• The collective biggest shift is in endowments and assets, not just grantmaking

For foundations looking to embed climate across their work, the report offers practical insights from peers already taking action.

is not just another issue, it is a systemic challenge that cuts across everything works on. Responding to this does not require starting from scratch. It often means shifting how we approach our work.

WINGS, in partnership with the European Philanthropy Coalition for Climate, invites you to the second session of our learning series: ‘Getting Started on Your Climate Journey: Approaching Climate Through a Systems Lens’.

This session is designed for foundations and Philanthropy Support Organisations (PSOs) and will explore:

✨ How to apply a systems lens to climate work
✨ Practical tools you can adapt to your context
✨ Insights from foundations already putting this into practice

Many of the capabilities foundations already have are exactly what is needed. It is often a question of shifting the how.

Most foundations say climate change matters. But how many are actually changing the way they work?

Later this week, in partnership with Philea, we’re releasing new data from the International Philanthropy Commitment on Climate Change, tracking how foundations are moving from pledge to progress.

Among respondents, we’re seeing real shifts–from increased funding to changes in how endowments are being used.

Some of the most important progress is happening in places you might not expect.

📅 Full findings out 7 May.

Philanthropy in Latin America and the Caribbean is becoming more locally rooted, collaborative, and adaptive, but major challenges remain.

Strengthening the infrastructure that supports , including networks, knowledge, data, and enabling environments, will be essential for philanthropy to reach its full potential as a catalyst for social progress.

Philanthropy in Mozambique already exists—it is just often unseen.

Across Mozambique, people are already , organising, and supporting one another through community networks, faith groups, social funds, and practices like (community-based savings and lending system). But too often, these forms of remain unseen in formal systems and under-recognised in development conversations.

The question is not whether philanthropy exists in . It does. The bigger question is what support structures, relationships, and investments are needed to help it grow in ways that are more connected, credible, and locally-led.

Our new report, ‘Exploratory Mapping of the Philanthropy Support Ecosystem in Mozambique’, examines what is already happening, where gaps exist, and what it would take to strengthen the ecosystem over time.
