A study published in Ornamental Horticulture presents a detailed cytogenetic characterization of Hymenocallis howardii through karyotype analysis and physical mapping of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The results provide robust insights into chromosomal organization, contributing to advances in taxonomy, systematics, and genetic improvement of ornamental species.

Key highlights
• The chromosome number of Hymenocallis howardii was confirmed, with a ploidy level inferred as 2n=4x=96.
• The karyotypic formula (64m + 30sm + 2st) indicates a slightly asymmetric karyotype.
• 45S rDNA sites were localized at two chromosomal loci, whereas 5S rDNA sites were identified at six distinct loci.
These findings enhance the understanding of genome structure and provide a cytogenetic framework to support future evolutionary and breeding studies within Amaryllidaceae.

A new study published in Ornamental Horticulture evaluates how propagation method, shading, and fertilization influence the growth and development of Curcuma alismatifolia. The findings provide practical strategies to improve plant performance and standardize floriculture production.
Key highlights
• Asexual propagation without reserve roots is viable and can match or surpass traditional methods.
• Cultivation under full sun reduces growth and development, while shaded environments improve plant performance.
• Fertilization with phosphorus combined with controlled-release fertilizer (Osmocote®️) significantly enhances rhizome development and biomass. The study demonstrates that combining rootless propagation, 30% shading, and phosphorus plus controlled-release fertilization results in optimal crop performance and greater production efficiency.

Did you know that the organic fertilizer Bokashi can outperform mineral fertilizers in orchid cultivation? A recent study in *Ornamental Horticulture* establishes a nutritional protocol for Oncidium baueri, revealing significant gains in growth and physiological performance.

Substrate-incorporated Bokashi maximizes plant growth and biomass, outperforming conventional mineral fertilization. In addition, the application method modulates nutrient allocation in plant tissues: foliar applications favor potassium uptake, while substrate incorporation enhances sulfur and zinc accumulation. Bokashi use also maintains optimal photosynthetic efficiency, ensuring plant performance without physiological stress.

These findings highlight Bokashi as a sustainable and efficient strategy for the production and valorization of native orchids.

Unlocking year-round blooms for the Siam Tulip

A new study published in Ornamental Horticulture reveals how plant growth regulators (PGRs) can precisely control flowering in Curcuma alismatifolia, helping growers plan production and increase market value.

Key highlights
* Flower development from corm-propagated plants occurs in two phases: floral transition (days 18–30) and floral organ development (days 30–70).
* Auxins, gibberellins, and cytokinins increase from vegetative to reproductive stages, while abscisic acid peaks during floral meristem formation and declines afterward.
* Exogenous IAA (20 mg L⁻¹) or BA (10 mg L⁻¹) accelerates early floral initiation and enhances flower development; GAs (20 mg L⁻¹) promote inflorescence elongation.

Strategic PGR use enables predictable, year-round flowering and improved production planning.

The article “Planning and evaluation of rooftop garden designs: A survey-based assessment study at the Faculty of Agriculture” investigates how underused university rooftops can be transformed into multifunctional green spaces through well-structured landscape design. By integrating user perceptions, expert interviews, and 3D landscape simulations, the study evaluates three rooftop scenarios and highlights how species diversity, spatial layout, color dynamics, and sensory elements shape user experience and overall satisfaction.

The findings identify the design attributes that most effectively enhance comfort, recreation, and educational value, offering an integrated framework for improving green roof planning. Ultimately, the study positions rooftop gardens as living laboratories that strengthen sustainability practices and enrich daily life on campus.

How does the cold affect dahlias grown in southern Brazil?

The study reveals that temperatures close to 0 °C for two days already cause necrosis, bud rot and mummified flowers in Dahlia variabilis.

The research identifies the lethal limit of plants and indicates management strategies to reduce frost damage and maintain sustainable production.

🌼 The article “Effect of humic acid application and CPPU spraying on growth and flowering of Marigold” evaluated how humic acid (HA) and the synthetic cytokinin forchlorfenuron (CPPU) influence vegetative growth, flowering traits, and chemical composition of Tagetes erecta L. grown under protected conditions in Iraq.

✨ Both HA and CPPU acted synergistically to enhance plant vigor, flowering, and biochemical quality. The study highlights their combined use as an effective biostimulant–growth regulator strategy for optimizing ornamental marigold production and improving nutrient assimilation and photosynthetic efficiency.
