A study published in Ornamental Horticulture presents a detailed cytogenetic characterization of Hymenocallis howardii through karyotype analysis and physical mapping of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequences using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The results provide robust insights into chromosomal organization, contributing to advances in taxonomy, systematics, and genetic improvement of ornamental species.
Key highlights
• The chromosome number of Hymenocallis howardii was confirmed, with a ploidy level inferred as 2n=4x=96.
• The karyotypic formula (64m + 30sm + 2st) indicates a slightly asymmetric karyotype.
• 45S rDNA sites were localized at two chromosomal loci, whereas 5S rDNA sites were identified at six distinct loci.
These findings enhance the understanding of genome structure and provide a cytogenetic framework to support future evolutionary and breeding studies within Amaryllidaceae.
