A spark became a movement – now it's over 2 million articles strong.

In 2015, the Wikimedia Foundation launched the Content Translation tool – a quiet revolution that changed how knowledge travels across languages. Before this tool, Wikimedia contributors had to manually translate, format, and publish articles across Wikipedia languages – a time-consuming and often inaccessible process. This barrier left vast content gaps in underrepresented languages like Igbo, Hausa, and Assamese.

With thoughtful automation and human review, the tool has since enabled over 2.1 million Wikipedia articles to be translated, dramatically expanding the reach of topics in STEM, history, and culture.

Over the past decade, consistent improvements – like better citation handling, a collaborative mobile interface, and MinT machine translation – have made it easier for multilingual contributors to share knowledge across borders. Indic and African language Wikipedias now flourish with content that was once out of reach. Volunteers have used the tool to fight misinformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, preserve cultural narratives, and increase access to critical information — all while ensuring quality remains high.

The Content Translation tool is a bridge between communities, a response to content inequity, and a reflection of Wikipedia’s long-standing belief: knowledge grows when it’s shared. Whether you are a new editor or a seasoned campaign organizer, your translations can help light the way for others, expanding access, curiosity, and connection across languages.

For almost 25 years, Wikipedia has stood as a testament to the power of humans – volunteers around the world who collaborate to build the largest encyclopedia in human history.

As generative AI reshapes the digital landscape, one question we’ve heard often is: When will AI replace Wikipedia’s human contributors? The answer is simple: it won’t.

Our new AI strategy reaffirms our belief that the heart of Wikipedia is its community. We're not replacing volunteers – we're supporting them. Our approach uses AI to eliminate technical barriers, giving contributors more time to focus on what matters: thoughtful research, collaborative writing, and building consensus.

This means using AI to assist moderators with repetitive tasks, enhancing content discoverability so editors can focus on deeper contributions, supporting multilingual collaboration through translation tools, and guiding new volunteers through mentorship. And as always, we’ll stay grounded in Wikimedia’s core values: transparency, open-source technology, human-centered design, and global inclusivity.

As Wikipedia continues to power the world’s knowledge and train today’s AI models, our new strategy is a commitment to the people who make it possible.
