😍🙏 😍🙏 A young mountain marmoset, one of the rarest primates in the world. This species of primate is considered at high risk of extinction. This is a Callithrix flaviceps juvenile born in the first captive breeding program for two highly endangered mountain marmosets species. The mountain marmosets Conservation Centre /UFV Centro de Conservação dos Saguis-da-Serra /UFV carries out a pioneering and fantastic work in reproduction for the conservation of mountain marmosets 🐒📸

🐒❤️Thank you Portal Petrópolis for the excellent article and Mariano Sant' Anna for your incredible park ranger work 🤗🙏

‘A family of buffy-tufted-ear marmosets (Callithrix aurita) was registered in the area of the State Natural Monument of Serra da Maria Comprida, a conservation unit located in Petrópolis. The animals (a male, a female and an infant) were identified during the Carnival holiday, by the park ranger Mariano Sant'Ana, during monitoring a trail. The species is endemic to the Atlantic Forest and considered one of the most threatened primates on the planet.

The mountain marmoset its habitat threatened mainly by the dispute with invasive species such as the Callithrix jacchus, they compete for food and territory, and generate hybrids with the native species, causing an impact on the maintenance of the populations of the mountain marmosets.

The mountain marmosets are mainly found on mountain ranges in the Southeast region, the species is a small primate easily identifiable by its white face, which is at odds with its dark coat. Reproduction focusses from September to November, when there is plenty of food, especially insects. The species has a great seed dispersing potential.’
