🔎 Who is represented in the data that trains artificial intelligence?

At the “Research with AI” panel, part of the event “Creation, Research and Social Justice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” Gouri Gargate, from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, highlighted a central challenge: the data that powers AI systems reflects inequalities that already exist in the world.

The predominance of data produced by the Global North can reproduce biases when these tools are used in different contexts. These issues also emerge in areas such as gender and race, as demonstrated by well-known cases involving recruitment systems and criminal risk assessment tools.

For Gouri, the question is not only how to use AI, but how to create technologies capable of recognizing and addressing the biases embedded in their own data and systems.

How can we conduct research with AI without letting bureaucracy limit creativity?

At the panel “Research with AI”, part of the event “Creation, Research and Social Justice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”, Flávia Silva, from Fiocruz, discussed some of the challenges institutions need to address when incorporating artificial intelligence into research.

For her, it is essential to invest in AI literacy for different audiences — workers, researchers, management professionals, and senior leadership — expanding their ability to understand both the possibilities and the limitations of these tools.

Another key issue is data sovereignty: to what extent can we trust the tools used institutionally? And how can researchers experiment with new technologies without compromising institutional security?

The challenge, therefore, is to find a balance between security and openness to experimentation, creating environments where AI can contribute to research witho

🔬 How can artificial intelligence contribute to the production of scientific knowledge?

For Walter Couto, from the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (IBICT), the use of AI in research should be accompanied by transparency and explainability. This means understanding the models used, their documentation, and the datasets involved in the process.

During the panel “Research with AI" held as part of the event “Creation, Research and Social Justice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence”, Walter also reflected on how AI tools themselves can become part of research outcomes, rather than simply serving as research aids.

In this excerpt, he uses the production of the first image of a black hole as an example to reflect on the role of technology in the construction of scientific knowledge.

💭 Not every creation involving AI represents the same kind of creativity.

For Nicolo Zangales (FGV), creations that simply combine existing elements should not be assessed by the same criteria as those that, with greater human involvement, break established patterns and produce something new.

During the panel “Create with AI”, held as part of the event “Creation, Research and Social Justice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” Nicolo proposed reflecting on how copyright law can recognize and encourage these creative “leaps,” while also highlighting the need for greater transparency across the AI value chain.

In this excerpt, he discusses the challenges of recognizing creativity in a context where AI, human creation, and power dynamics are increasingly interconnected.

🔎 What defines authorship when artificial intelligence becomes part of the creative process?

For Sérgio Branco (ITS Rio), authorship is related to control over the creative process, not necessarily to absolute control over the final result.

During the panel “Create with AI”, held as part of the event “Creation, Research and Social Justice in the Age of Artificial Intelligence", Sérgio reflected on how the incorporation of AI into creative processes challenges traditional ways of thinking about authorship and copyright.

In this excerpt, he discusses why the author may be the person who guides the creative process, even without having complete control over the outcome, and how we are still developing the rules to address these new forms of creation.
