Amazonas court assesses that oil auction blocks threaten environmental reserves
The Federal Court of Amazonas assessed that three blocks granted in the recent oil auction overlap six environmentally sensitive areas, including places that are home to species at risk of extinction.
The 4th Cycle of the Permanent Offer auction, under a concession regime, held on December 13, offered more than 600 areas, but only a total of 192 were sold (32% of the offer). Production blocks in the Amazon were one of the focuses of protests by environmental organizations.
This Friday's decision, the 29th, was handed down on a preliminary basis by judge Alan Fernandes Minori, from the 7th court, and partially addresses the question presented by the Arayara Institute against the auction.
The judge ordered that the legal process be published on the page dealing with the event, on the ANP website, so that the market is aware that there is a legal discussion, of an environmental nature, involving those areas.
At the same time, he also understood that it was not necessary to evaluate nine other blocks in the region that were not sold.
The injunction does not meet the original request of the action, which sought to cancel the concession of all areas, but the NGO Arayara considered the position.
