We caught up with Flora Beverley 🦄 🌱, one of our incredible Goal 5 Gender Equality ambassadors, at Blue Earth in London.

We asked her why fighting for gender equality continues to be so important to her.

“It should be a given that gender equality matters, but until that point, I will keep banging the drum. We all do better when women do better, so gender equality is not only a moral obligation, it’s also genuinely beneficial for everyone!”

Every story reminded us of one truth: Indigenous women are on the front lines protecting critically endangered biodiversity and holding communities together in the face of climate collapse. We must support them at all costs.

Global literacy has climbed to 87%, up from 76% in 2000 - but at current rates, the gender gap won’t close until roughly 2065.

And it isn’t evenly spread: three in four of the world’s illiterate adults live in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, while the Global North sits at near-universal literacy. 129 million girls remain out of school entirely.

Meanwhile, a different story is unfolding among the young in wealthier nations. Gen Z now identify as readers at 66%, up 14 points since 2022 - and print, not e-books, is their format of choice. Researchers call it a “postdigital” instinct: a generation raised inside the algorithm, reaching for something that doesn’t ping, track, or write itself.

Two very different relationships with the same skill. UN Goal 4 Quality Education is about closing that distance.

Literacy is more than knowing how to read and write.

It means being able to access information, understand your rights, make informed choices and have your voice heard.

Yet today, 739 million adults still lack basic literacy skills — almost two-thirds are women. And 133 million girls remain out of school worldwide.

Progress is being made, but the inequality remains. Education gives people the tools to shape their own futures and when women and girls have access to those tools, the impact reaches generations.

This World Literacy Day, we’re wearing Goal 4: Quality Education — a reminder that education is a right, not a privilege, and that everyone deserves the opportunity to learn, grow and shape what comes next.

Today is International Literacy Day, and for the first time in history, Brazilians who can read, but simply don’t, now outnumber those who do.

Nobody’s fixing that overnight. But maybe we can start somewhere. Maybe we can fight doomscrolling, with word scrolling.

As a Ambassador for Goal 4, quality education, I am proudly wearing mine and passing the second one on, as a bookmark, to 12-year-old author .
