💚 Energy transition for whom?

From the People’s Summit at COP30 in Belém, we spoke with Alejandra from Feministas Patagonia Rebelde about the ultra-development of so-called “green” hydrogen in Chilean Patagonia.

In Magallanes, megaprojects are being promoted as paths to progress and decarbonization, yet they are already deepening gender-differentiated impacts: widening labor gender gaps, increased gender-based violence, masculinization of the territory, and an even greater burden of care work in a region where these inequalities are already alarming.

📢 As Alejandra points out, a truly just transition means making decisions collectively, in a democratic way, and with a focus on the needs of the territory.

From the banks of the Piramanha River in Belém do Pará during , Aryampa carries with him the struggle of communities resisting the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) in Uganda. He reflects on the shared fights of communities across Africa and Latin America resisting corporate control of land and extractive industries.

“We need to see the just energy transition not only as reducing carbon emissions, but as dismantling the system that harms us. A just transition is one where communities and workers are not sacrificed, and where projects are built around the needs of the people.”

“Lithium Mine” is a poem by Leonard Mabasa from Buhera Residents Network Trust, written as the meets in Africa for the first time.

His words speak from the ground in Buhera, where the Chinese-funded Sabi Star project has brought fear of land loss, environmental harm, and cultural dislocation. These realities are shared by mining-affected communities across the continent.

Leonard’s voice appears in our new report released ahead of the G20, which centers community experiences in and the and reveals how today’s critical-minerals agenda is deepening inequalities instead of delivering a just energy transition.
