Defending our food systems from corporate monopoly and creating alternatives that are sustainable, just and independent of animal exploitation.

Seed the Commons is a small non-profit that is working to create food systems that are just, sustainable and independent of animal exploitation. Our previous name, Millahcayotl, comes from the Nahuatl words milpa and yotl and can be translated as “the way of the milpa”. Milpas are a traditional form of Mesoamerican agriculture in which corn, beans and squash are cultivated in an integrated manner. For us, the word millahcayotl represents a holistic approach of food production and consumption and an understanding of the relation between agriculture and environment, food and community, and the importance of the acts of growing food and feeding oneself and others as tools of social and environmental action. It’s also a reminder that agriculture does not require animal exploitation. Our programs seek to decrease dependence on and participation in the global corporate food complex by promoting small-scale, decentralized alternatives that are healthy and just for producers, eaters, and communities as a whole. We integrate an animal liberation perspective and uphold models that are not reliant on animals for food or labor.

On Sunday, we'll be joined by Matthew Nasser-Gammet for our panel titled Farming for a Time of War and Climate Change!

As the pentagon asks for 1.5 TRILLION DOLLARS to wreak death, suffering and ecocide on the world, we need to re-direct our resources to support ways of living that protect and heal human and environmental health. Matthew's work is just that sort of thing, and we're so excited to learn from him.

🚨 At the Santa Marta conference on fossil fuel transition, we pushed for a model that is constantly excluded from official negotiations: food systems centered on animal-free ecological farming. 🌱

The Santa Marta People’s Summit Declaration integrated some our language! For the first time in a global civil society declaration of this scope:

🐄 Animal agriculture is treated as part of the fossil fuel system.
🌍 Methane is structurally linked to agriculture and land use.
🛑 "Regenerative grazing" is officially listed as a false solution.

This is not just a symbolic win; it's a new baseline for future climate negotiations.

We made history in Colombia last week.

Seed the Commons succeeded in getting groundbreaking language into the Santa Marta People's Summit Declaration, including:

- Integration of food systems into fossil fuel dependency frameworks,
- Inclusion of agricultural methane emissions as a consideration,
- The naming of both industrial and animal agriculture in relation to the above points
- Support for shifting subsidies towards animal-free ecofarming
- Inclusion of regenerative grazing in the list of false solutions

The People's Summit was a parallel, global civil society process to the First Conference on Transitioning Away on Fossil Fuels. Two months of online collaboration, followed by the three-day summit, concluded with the adoption of the People’s Summit Declaration. This, already, is historic. To then also get the above language included into this document represents a drastic pivot.

This language radically shifts the narrative around food systems and sets a new baseline.
