The Circle of Specialized Educators and Friends of Persons with Disabilities (CESAPH) recently held an event in Muramvya Province, supported by The Giving Exchange, to empower women with disabilities. This initiative focused on enhancing their autonomy through sewing training, the distribution of sewing machines, and the formation of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs).

The main goal is to help these women achieve financial independence by teaching them sewing skills to create and sell textile products. The sewing machines provided ensure they can continue their work after training. VSLAs promote solidarity and mutual aid, essential for overcoming economic challenges.

The event was elevated by the presence of the governor of Muramvya Province and the commune administrator, who both delivered speeches emphasizing the importance of empowering women in community development. Qualified trainers conducted sewing courses, enabling participants to learn both basic and advanced techniques. This initiative aims to reduce poverty and improve living standards for women with disabilities and their families, while also fostering social cohesion in the community. It serves as a potential model for similar initiatives nationwide

The Circle of Specialized Educators Friends of Persons with Disabilities (CESAPH) is an association committed to promoting the rights and autonomy of persons with disabilities through a project aimed at empowering vulnerable households, funded by Spirit in Action (SIA). Recently, it organized activities to establish contact with the authorities of the Nyarusange commune, as well as with the leaders of the Biziya and Nyarubenga hills in the Gitega province. These actions also facilitated direct engagement with beneficiaries, allowing for the identification of their specific needs. Furthermore, these initiatives included raising awareness within the local community about the importance of inclusion.

To achieve the project's objectives, information campaigns, meetings with local leaders, and home visits were implemented, accompanied by evaluation questionnaires. It is important to emphasize that the criteria for selecting beneficiaries include socio-economic vulnerability, the type of disability, and motivation to participate. Additionally, the project provides for vocational training and access to materials, such as sewing machines and their accessories, to promote economic empowerment. Simultaneously, it aims to strengthen the social integration of persons with disabilities through awareness campaigns and the creation of support networks.

With the financial support of UNDP Burundi, a consortium of associations, including UDCEH_Burundi, BurundiFracade, and CESAPH, has distributed a total of 20,689 agroforest plants, 1,000 avocado trees races and 10,000 fruit plants in the commune of Muhuta. This project aims to strengthen the resilience of communities against the effects of climate change, with a particular focus on the hills of Gasebeyi and Burunga, which are among the most affected.

Jolys Hakizimana, President of UDCEH and representative of the consortium, emphasized that 200 households will benefit from this initiative. These households will receive plants of various fruit species, such as avocados races , lemons, oranges, and passion fruits, as well as trees like calliandra and grevillea. These species are essential for soil fertilization and crop improvement, while also providing a source of food for livestock.

The beneficiaries of this project have been encouraged to care for and protect these plants. Indeed, not only will these plants contribute to improved nutrition, but they will also play a crucial role in combating malnutrition while supporting agriculture and livestock farming, potentially generating additional income for households.

It should also be noted that this project will be followed by the distribution of small livestock and vegetables, aimed at further enhancing the resilience of local communities.

Thus, by uniting our efforts, we are building a more resilient and sustainable future in the face of the challenges posed by climate change
