Emergency Education in Refugee Camp
In the heart of refugee camp, classrooms rise from fragile structures, built not of luxury but of necessity. Here, education is not a privilege—it is survival. For children displaced by crisis, the classroom becomes a sanctuary, a place where hope is stitched together with chalk and determination.
UPHWO Burundi - United Partners for Humanitarian Welfare Organization has stepped into this urgent mission. Amid scarcity of resources, the organization is working tirelessly to restore continuity in learning. Wooden benches, improvised blackboards, children sitting on the floor on plastic sheets, and the voices of volunteer teachers form the backbone of this fragile system. Yet, despite these efforts, the needs remain immense.
Every day, hundreds of children walk through the dust of the camp to sit in overcrowded rooms. They carry not only books but also the weight of interrupted childhoods and consequences of the war in DRC. Their resilience is remarkable, but resilience alone cannot build schools, provide materials, or train educators. Support is essential.
This is not just about education—it is about dignity, protection, and the possibility of a future beyond the camp. UPHWO’s work is a lifeline, but the journey is far from complete. Much remains to be done: classrooms to be built, supplies to be secured, teachers to be supported.
The story of is a call to action. It reminds us that in times of crisis, education must not be forgotten. It is the thread that binds communities, the light that guides children through uncertainty, and the promise that tomorrow can be different.
